New anode for my 2014 Monty

My Monty is not close by so I can't check what size my anode is. Is 9 1/4 our standard size for replacement?

Yes, another determination based
on your specific usage, is to use magnesium or aluminum.

I just replaced our anode in our 12 gallon Suburban water heater. The anode I use is the Suburban magnesium anode, part #232767. The photo below is what our anode looked like after one year. We do have a water softener, so do not know how much that affects the life of the anode.

My original magnesium wore out so fast I replaced it with an aluminum one. After 2 years that one still looked almost new, as if it was not doing much of anything. Went back to the magnesium rod.

Because of CRS, I don't recall all the details, but I thought I remember reading somewhere that one type of Anode rod is for Glass Lined tanks, while the other for Steel tanks, but don't quote me.

There are only two types of tanks for conventional RV water heaters, aluminum like what is in the Atwood models, and steel like what is in the Suburban water heaters. The aluminum tanks do not use an anode, and the steel tanks are coated with a porcelain glass material which is referred to as 'glass lined', and these tanks need an anode because as the unit cycles from cold to hot, tiny cracks start developing in the glass lining and the only way to prevent the steel from corroding is to have a sacrificial anode inside that will erode away which keeps the tank from rusting.

Remember, if your anode rod looks like rohrmann's did (and most will), flush out your hot water heater well when replacing it. All of the parts of that rod are creating a sludge in the bottom of your tank. You will be amazed if you have never done it. Takes 5 min. If you don't have water where it is stored, put a sticky over your water heater switch to do it next trip before turning it on.
