Tow rating standards are on the way
Interesting article. Looks like by some time next year there may be standards for testing and setting tow ratings. Finally.

It'll be very interesting to see what happens to the tow ratings of some of these 1/2 tons won't it? It will also give a real world idea of what we can really expect from out trucks. I say HURRAY!!!!!!!

Having enjoyed all the "pixie dust" ratings, I am really interested in seeing what they come up with. Hope that it isn't one of those "self policing" standards (several industrial groups use those). Wonder what the real ratings will be. Bob

I have always thought it but it is kind of interesting that they are finally admitting that those numbers posted on the inside of the door were just pulled out from under someones hat.

SAE is not a federal agency.

I think the jury is out until we see the actual results.

Some years back, I participated in an SAE committee. I was pleased with the process and result. The SAE did not drive for any particular result but managed the process and format. To be sure, some participants were stronger than others either in politics or technical knowledge but there was enough review and rewrite to ensure a good end product. As has been said, the SAE IS NOT government but a collection of engineering types interested in standards.
From my experience, the fact that the standards are coming together so quickly is a good sign. After all, this subject is not really rocket science. The fact it is moving quickly suggests the politics have taken a back seat -- good -- We will all benefit.
