It's about time.....

Don't know about your neck of the woods but in central Florida the price of gasoline is finally catching up to diesel.

When I bought my Duramax in '03 diesel was 30 to 40 cents a gallon cheaper than gasloine. Than all of a sudden the pricing reversed itself and diesel cost skirocketed.

Well the worm is once again turning. While diesel at 2.17 per gallon is still high, gasoline is once again catching up. Gasoline prices range from 2.07 for regular and 2.31 for hi-test.

Glenn

And no one can explain this phenonmen to me so that I can understand. I still think that about 5 people control these prices and the price of the day/week/month depends on their mood of the day/week/month.

On the ride back from Texas we saw diesel less than gas only one time. Neck and neck pricing a LOT.

What I have never been able to figure out is why the price at say, a Mobile station (just picking one here, for the conversation) in West Nashville is $2.00 for regular gas, and across town maybe even only 2 miles away, price for same at same brand is $2.35.

Besides being stressful to pay these prices, the pricing game is too stressful to even try and figure out. Just point me to the cheapest pump, thank you. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Saw gas yesterday in Adrian Michigan for $2.11 for regular, also $2.17.

What really got to me on a recent trip to Bristol Tn was that diesel was ~$2.20 south of the Mason-Dixon line and ~$2.45 north of it.

The price of diesel is a shame. It is made from what is left after they make gasoline; the dregs at the bottom of the barrel. However, as all know, with the diesel vehicle crazy that we all helped to fuel, the refineries have decided to make a lot of profit from the price of diesel to offset the gasoline prices. I too bough my first diesel when it was nearly 40 cents per gallon chaaper than gasoline. In my area of Alabama, we have no pipeline or tank farm. That idea was voted against for fear of environmental issues a few years back. So, the local distributor who has a license for all of, and I mean ALL of the major brands, trucks fuel in from all over. There is not competition, all stations are the same price except for small independents. Prices here are normally 8 to 10 cents per gallon higher. I just love to get on the road and buy diesel cheaper in other states. I fueled up today, and that bill was $61.00 for a tank here in Huntsville. Of well!

Diesel here in Pismo Beach, CA is $2.799 per gallon. What a rip.

I remember when diesel was much cheaper than regular. Now here in Western Washington.. the cheapest diesel we have found is 2.59 and regular is 2.38. Our legislature is currently working on adding another 10cent gas tax to help cover shortfall....where will it end?!!!

Take a read of this article, and you will get a sense of what is happening in the diesel fuel industry. The few refineries that produce deisel are in the process of converting over to government mandated sulfur reduction. It has to drop from 500ppm to 15ppm by end of 2006, if I recall. Also, starting in 2007, the government will start to tax diesel, at a much higher rate than gasoline. This is to pay for pollution clean-up, etc. The uplift for 2007 is 17 cents per gallon if I recall. There is expected to be major shortages of diesel fuel starting in 2006, as the refineries have no choice but to shut down and convert over to low sulfur production. I have a good friend who works in the industry, and he indicated that he would not be surprised to see diesel at double the price of gasoline. The only hope is that the governement understands the impact of transporting goods via the trucking industry, and finds a better way to transition to low sulfur diesel.

Will this impact existing diesel engines? Will modifications be required?

I just returned from 6 months on the road and pulled into our town (Tupper Lake, NY) and the diesel was 2.53. The next day traveling thru town it was up to 2.62 and the only other sta. that has diesel is 2.58. How's that for prices?

No. Existing engines can use the low sulfur diesel fuel. It just runs a lot cleaner!

Not entirely complete. Sulfur is a lubricant that the fuel pumps & injectors depend on. The new formulation had BETTER replace the lubricity removed with the sulfur or there will be terrible problems with engines. That said, there will still not need to be modifications to the engines.
