Heat strip, what is it?

Chilly this AM in MO, low 50s. Fireplace putting out nice heat, bathroom floor warm. I see a heat strip mode for front AC which puts out a little warmth. What is this and I wonder how it differs from heat pump on my old SOB.
Oh, 2nd week in 2015 3160. I need to do a profile signature

A heat strip is a simple electric heating element, which when combined with ac air flow, provides a source of modest heat. Heat pumps use an absorption process to create heat, provide greater capacity, and are common in HVAC applications. I will let somebody smarter than me explain how that process works. Bottom line, heat pumps are a lot better.

Has anyone added heat pump, does it require entire new unit?

Yes, it would take a unit that, simple explanation, can be reversed so that it squeezes out what heat there is in the outside air and transfers it inside. Considering the expense vs benefit we opted for a small electric heater to supplement the fire place.

Heat pumps only work down to about 40 degrees...then they just blow cool air.

Heat pumps only work down to about forty degrees? Is that all the RV AC Heatpump is good for? If that is the case I really don't need one. I wanted to pay extra for them when the unit was being built but I found out you could only get them on a Big Sky. I know many decades ago the house Heatpumps did not work all that great once you got below 25/30 degrees. Obviously in the last twenty years home Heatpumps have gotten way better. Mine at home will put out good heat down in the single digits and teens. Yes it does take longer to heat the house but it does put out hot air. It is also really cold out The big loss in my opinion is the recycle/defrost mode that happens when the outside unit ices up and it reverses the system and uses heat from inside the house to defrost the unit.
