Break wear in time

Just installed the new brakes ( Dexter 7000# brakes ) we got at the national rally last summer. I have noticed a marked reduction in braking power. I know new brakes have to "wear in" some but was wondering how long I can expect this reduced brake feeling? They were installed by a professional and I double checked the adjustment. They seem right to me. Any advice would be appreciated.

Not trying to embarrass, but you did put lefts on the left and rights on the right? Other than that, you should be good. Are the new ones the self adjusting? I replaced ours, with the same that was on the rig, 7,000# self adjusting, and they were working great. Of course, we were at the in-laws at 3,800 ft, and getting the rig down the hill took a lot of brake applications, so they were fully adjusted by the time we got down to the valley.

On those occasions that I have reworked trailer brakes, I have noticed better braking, not less braking. I would recommend checking the adjustment again.

Bob, I had them installed by an RV dealer. I should hope they knew to place them on the proper side. (if not they will hear from me for sure!)And they are the self adjusting type, same as what was on there before except they were 5700# brakes. Since then I have only put about 120 miles on them and I have noted a very minor improvment.

Mike, I was under the rig the other day and checked the adjustment for myself. Not that I am a professional but I have done my share of brakes and they nseemed OK when I checked.

Thanks for the replys guys.

I recently had the brakes replaced on our Montana Mountaineer. The braking immediately after the work was done was terrible and I questioned it with the guy that did the work. he said they need to wear in. I would say it took 100 miles to get them back to where I think they should be. Not fun, towing the rig down I5 with brakes I felt were pretty poor. They are good now - but it did take some time.

I adjusted my brake controller to maximum initially - now its back at 7.5.

Hope this helps.

Kevin,
when I replaced my brakes last year right before we met you all in Streetsboro,OH on our way to Goshen, my brakes were terrible also. But, by the time we got back home they worked much better.

I think you need to pull it more and do some braking so they will adjust.
