Wheel Covers

What are the thoughts on protecting the RV tires from the sun with covers?
Thanks Ken

We do it. We went to the Escapee's Boot Camp and a retired tire engineer from Goodyear said UV rays are very hard on trailer tires. He also suggested that if you are parked on concrete for any length of time that you put cheap plastic placemats under each tire so it doesn't contact the concrete. He said that chemicals in the concrete work on the anti aging chemicals in the tires and that's why you sometime see black marks on concrete where tires sit for a long time. We don't put the covers on the tires if we are just staying for a week or so (depending on angles the slides help cover them), but when we're parked in AZ for the winter of KS for the summer they go on right away.

My GY 670 RV tires say it's not necessary to cover them, that they are treated to prevent damage from being exposed to the weather. My philosophy is that it can't hurt to cover them...so I do.

We use 303 Protectant instead but covers sound like a good idea.

We've done it both ways. However, my thoughts go back to how old is/are the tire(s)? We have gone to all the trouble to put down place mats and pull the rig over them, then cover the wheels with wheel covers, yet we change our tires every four years. When we change them we see no abnormal wear or sidewall cracking. Lonnie Bussey of Tire Country, Farwell, TX should be able to answer any questions about the validity of tires versus concrete. He's one of many experts that I rely on. I remember when Glen Adams was still alive and contributing to this forum and his expertise was pretty much along the lines that Lonnie follows. Personally, I think it's a waste of time and effort to go to all the trouble of putting something under the tires and on the tires; much like the time and effort used to inflate and deflate air bags every time you move.

When our slide are out the tires are pretty much under the slides and not exposed to the direct sun. We also agree with ols 1932.

I tossed my set of tire covers when they got old and cracked the last time we moved the 5th. Doubt if I will replace them after reading and agreeing here. Makes it much easier to inflate tires when parked too!!

Yes, when our slides are out the tires are well protected, but during the off season when the slides are in we have started using the covers.

I had over 55,000 miles on my 2004 3400RL with the Tacoma Tires that still looked brand new after 8 years. Tread life was still over half and the tires had no signs of aging or cracking. I contribute the life and performance of my previous tires to air pressure and my keeping them covered anytime the coach was parked for more than two days. I keep my new tires covered as well. Cost of tire covers was $38 per side -- cheap insurance in my opinion.

I use the covers. As I inspect things if the covers start showing signs of wear and decay, I can only imagine they saved the tires from that damage. So far so good and while the outsides of the tires look fantastic that doesn't mean tire rot is not occurring inside. I do have Marathons and will baby them as much as possible since the rig mostly sits in my driveway.
