Surge Guards

My wife and I are leaving the middle of May to go to the Grand Canyon and then head north for the summer should I get a electrical surge guard for my 5th wheel

I think some sort of surge protection is always important, check this link for a little info on them

Yes! A simple answer that will save you a lot of frustration.

A more complex answer is that on several occasions the PT-50C by Progressive Industries has saved my Montana 3400Rl, and now my SOB on several occasions. So my suggestion is to purchase a surge guard of good quality and RV away.

Yes, you should get some kind of protection. You don't have to, but you should. Do some research between Surge Guard devices and Electrical Monitoring Systems so you can make an educated choice. Any choice is better than nothing. We opted for the Progressive EMS and it has protected us several times.

I installed the Progressive Industries Power Protection unit (EMS-HW50C) in my previous 5th wheel (2008 Carri-Lite 36SBQ), and it saved us twice from what would have been some expensive damage, specifically to the appliances and A/C units. Before I traded for my current 5th wheel, I removed it from the Carri-Lite and reinstalled it in the Montana. I am sure sure it will continue to protect my investment. As note by all, do some research on the various surge and EMS systems available.

In short, yes. Compared to the cost and time to repair damages incurred without one I feel it is a good investment.

Dont leave home without one. I found the best price at www.nextag.com/rv-surge-protector/stores-html if that doesnt work for you go to google and type in rv surge protectors and scroll down to the 9th one and click on it. I chose the PI 50 amp
Good luck

We have the PI 50 amp and notice the fridge switches to gas when we use it. When we unplug it the fridge operates on electricity just fine. All other electric appliances work correctly including the air wheather using the Surge Guard or not. Might be a simple fix, but have not yet figured it out. Garry

We are having severe thunder storms moving through Florida and the PI PT-50C had dropped the power to the camper 3 times this morning due to lighting strikes.. Great protection.

We have a 50A Surge Guard. Won't hook up without it. It does drop out once in a while, depending on the campground and weather.

Wouldn't be without our surge protectors. Have both the 30- and 50-amp Surge Guards. Had the 30-amp when we bought the Montana so we then bought the 50-amp. I can use the 50 with 30-amp power, but I can't use the 30 with 50-amp power.

I have exactly the same setup. Got the 30amp for the tt and the 50amp for the 5er. First, is the Surge Guard an ok unit, I see that a lot of the folks have the Progressive units? Second, why keep the 30amp unit if you can use the 50amp for 30amp or 50amp connections?

The Surge Guard is a good unit and has saved us twice when power suged and did havoc with two RVs on the same power as us. We came through okay because of the Surge Guard. Those who purchase the Progressive unit do so, I believe, because it's cheaper. It all boils down to what do you want? I like the portability of the Surge Guard. I lock mine either to the rig or to the power pole, whichever is most convenient.
