Corpus Christi vs Brownsville
Hello MOC'ers,
We're taking a couple of weeks in March and heading to the TX Gulf Coast. We'll be staying at one of our C2C parks for a week.
We would appreciate your advice on selecting which place for our home base, Corpus Christi or Brownsville. Our interest is sight-seeing the typ. Tourist stuff and Motorcycling the back roads on our Royal Star.
What things are a must see and/or do in both places?
We'll also be spending a few days at Big Bend Natl.Park. Same question here. What's a must see?
We'll be looking eagerly forward for your comments,
Thanks & Happy camping

Steve ... can't give you any info on Corpus Christi or Brownsville but we were at Big Bend just about a year ago. It's great!!! Be sure to stop at the Visitors Center when you first get there ... they have some really good books there on what to see, where to hike, where to go 4-wheeling, etc. The books are only $2 or $3 and have a wealth of information.
Hopefully, you'll be able to hike into Santa Elena Canyon and you simply must drive out to the hot springs! You might want to check out our website and look at the February or March 2004 postcards ... you might get some ideas of where you want to go while at Big Bend. We had a wonderful time there.
Just a warning ... the water at our RV park in Terlingua (Big Bend MotorInn and RV Park) was horrible so you might want to take some drinking water with you. Also, the closest grocery store is about 67 miles away so you might want to make sure you're well stocked before heading in there. There is a convenience store of sorts but Steve paid $4 for a box of Club Crackers!!!
As Charlie, a new member, said ... a person has to be going to Terlingua to get there ... it's a long way out there! (Terlingua is about 3 miles outside the west gate.)

If you stay in Corpus Christi places you in a better place to see South Central Texas and the Hill Country. Your less than two hours away from San Antonio; riverwalk, Alamo, etc.. The Texas Hill Country is where you should use you cycle; You can travel on the marked hill country trail to places like New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, Blanco, Luckenbach, etc.. Give it another two months (say beginning of April) and the bluebonnets and wildflowers will be coming out.
There is alot to see an do daytripping on a cycle from Corpus. Corpus Christi has an Aquarium, the aircraft carrier Intrepid, great seafood at local restaurants in the early summer, good fishing starting in May. I have lived in the San Antonio area for thirty years an in all honesty have never wanted to go down to Brownsville, its just another border town. You are another 3.5 hours south of Corpus Christi, when in Brownsville. Being a motorcyclist I think you would be much happier going to destinations from CC.

Brownsville is closer to Mexico. A lot of Winter Texans stay there as it is warmer. Right now there is an advisory against going to Mexico at Brownsville because of all the drug related shootings going on. Progresso is the only border town not on the advisory.
Never stayed at Corpus.

Steve, travelingman mentioned several places in hill country. On our website also is a number of things we saw and did in that area. This would be in the January and February 2004 postcards. A number of the things in those postcards are 'off the beaten path' things in addition to the usual touristy things. Feel free to peruse as you will.
