A friend just bought a new F 350. The bed rails are exactly the same as my 2014 Ram. I never had a problem with my Montana.

I went today and checked the height of the new trucks, the Chevy, Ram and Ford. Most were 3/4 ton but a few were 1 ton. They were all quad cab 4 door long bed single wheel trucks. I took a tape measure, no guessing.
They all measured 60 inches +- one inch from the ground to the top of the tailgate. There is virtually no difference between the height of any of them.

Didn't measure, but I recently replaced my 2009 Quad cab Ram, with a 2016 Ford Lariat Super cab. Both trucks SRW, long beds, with 4 wheel drive. To get the pin box to clear the rails on the tonneau cover I had to raise the Ford factory 5th wheel hitch to the top adjustment, had the same tonneau cover on the Ram with no problem. I ordered the Ford, & I think part of the problem is that when you order the 5th wheel prep, and the factory 5th wheel hitch, 20" wheels are also added, weather you want them or not. I can tell you this truck is tall, I'm 5'10" & can't check the oil without standing on a step stool.

My 2012 F350 CC long bed FX4 with 20" wheels measures 58" to the top of the tailgate. Guess that is why they seemed so tall to me.

My 2016 is also 58" to the top of the tailgate, & 57" to the bed rail at the center of the rear wheel well.

I forgot to add, the Ram and Chevy that trucks that I checked could have been 16 or 17 models. All of the Fords were 17 models.

Thanks for checking that Lynwood. Man those '17s look good going down the highway, but DW says no to looking - our '16 is more than enough

I am looking at getting a new Ford to replace my current 2008 F350 Super Duty and just returned from measuring comparable 2016 and 2017 models all with 20" wheels and here is what I found.

My 2008 Ford F350 SRW Super Duty with 20" tires
Distance from ground to top of rail at rear axle: 56.5"
Distance from top of rail down to bed: 20"
Calculated distance of bed above ground: 36.5"

2016 Ford F350 SRW Super Duty with 20" tires
Distance from ground to top of rail at rear axle: 57.25"
Distance from top of rail down to bed: 20"
Calculated distance of bed above ground: 37.25"

2017 Ford F350 SRW Super Duty with 20" tires
Distance from ground to top of rail at rear axle: 58.25"
Distance from top of rail down to bed: 21.25"
Calculated distance of bed above ground: 37.0"

My assessment from this is the following:
The distance from the ground to the floor of the bed of all of the trucks are all very close. Not enough of a difference to create a problem in my opinion. However, the distance from the bed of the truck to the top of the truck rails is 1.25" greater on the 2017 than my 2008. That measurement difference will directly reduce the gap between the top of my bed rails and the 5th wheel. I like a 6" minimum for that gap and it will be reduced to 4.75". If I don't like the resulting loss in the gap, the solution is to raise my my Trailer Saver hitch up a notch (1.5"). I don't know if a 1.5" rise in the front of the 5ver while towing would cause a meaningful shift in weight to the rear 5er wheels. If it is true that the springs on the 2017 are softer than my 2008, then the truck would ride lower when towing and that would bring the rig back to level weight distribution. I'm thinking that Ford has thought this through, at least I hope so.

I just picked up a new 2016 F350 crew cab short bed last week. I had a B&W hitch put in and lowered to the lowest setting. The Montana rides level and has about 6 to 7 inches of clearance. Love this new truck.

I just bought a 2017 Lariat crew cab, with the long box, 176" long. I bought it with the 18K Reece puck hitch. At first I thought I was in trouble, but after measuring, this is what I have:

Side bed height from the center of the tire --- 58 1/2"
Hitch height unloaded --- 54"
Hitch height loaded --- 49"
2005 3400RL bottom of plate at level --- 48 3/4"
1)Demco Glide Ride Pin box.
The truck was measured with 60 miles left in the fuel tank, and nothing in the bay of the trailer, so just guessing I would think when I load the trailer, and fill up the truck it should drop more, I will be re-measuring when I am ready to pull out for the south, at the end of December. Will update at that time.

I see that most of the post on this thread were in Oct 2016 and was wondering what was happening with the bed height of the 2017 F350 what have been the experiences.

I currently tow a 2009 Montana 3150 with a 2009 F350. I will be picking up my 2017 F350 in the next couple of days since it has been built and shipped. Like so many I have noticed the bed height of the 2017 are higher. I measured, checked, compared the trucks side by side and it looks like the 2017 are at least 1" to 2" higher than everything older. Everything on the 2017 seems bigger, compared to my 2009 the dimensions are over all length 246.2 to 250, Inside box 20.1 to 21.1, open tailgate to ground 35.1-37.3 to 38", top rail 58" to 59" or more.

After looking at everything I decided to go for it and ordered a new truck, its kind of odd but some 2017 F350 seem higher than others most were around the 58" but some 60" I guess it was what options were on it. In addition after a lot of thought I purchased a B&W Companion BRWK3300 it has the factory puck system of mounting.

Now I'm just waiting to see how it all matches up, there wasn't a lot of clearance with the 2009 truck but I figured raising the hitch to the middle height of 17 3/4 plus would probably work.

What has been the experience of other Montana owners? Does the 2017 F350 work with out modifications? I'd be really interested in what other have found.

Gray, I have the same concerns on the bed height. Did everything match up, and how's the truck working for you.

I have a 2016 F-350 DRW 4x4 Long bed pulling a High Country with the Anderson Hitch and have no problems at all. I have about 6" of clearance on bed rails. Love the truck and pulls 14,000 lbs like it isn't there.
