Well, I fell for it....
But, my Norton caught it and dropped a bomb on it.
I was expecting a package that got lost somewhere and clicked on the download before I thought twice.. Too quick for my own good. IDIOT!

HUH? This contained a virus? It looks official, but I have to admit the clue is that you should NOT get an email, since more often than not, your email address is NOT the method for tracking and receiving delivery information.
Remember all, that ALL shippers provide their website for you to query the status of your package, they do NOT use your email address. If you receive an email like this, make sure your virus and web security are active and updated.
Ozz, did you ever find your package?

On the surface, that one looks legitimate. If it had said "We deep sorry infrom you, " then you would immediately be suspicious.
Sounds like it was at least from someone who is fluent in the English language.

Yes, I knew 5 seconds after I clicked it was a boner mistake. My computer is toast.. I downloaded the deal, now my computer is whacked,i'm running Norton, butI think the damage is done. I closed the wireless as soon as I could, but when I rebooted I had 50 screens with big red x's.
Sue is changing all the passwords on her computer just in case, we used one or two for many sites. I am using a small travel computer now.
Dang.. It's not easy being the dull crayon in the box....

The initial reaction would go something like:
Followed by the realization that more drastic actions may be required:
Sorry for the very old pic, I didn't have a newer image of Ozz in the library! Very sorry to hear of your troubles Ozz! Hoping some humor will help to diffuse the situation!
As a last resort, who you gonna call?:

Ozz,
You may want to give the new Microsoft Security Essential Offline a try and see if it will clean up your PC. You can download it here: http://tinyurl.com/89vcnst
It runs from a USB stick or CD/DVD and you'll need to change your BIOS setting so that they boot first instead of your hard drive. It's really pretty easy and reviews have been good so far.

I got the one from DHL yesterday. It had my name after the "Dear:" I cut the tracking number and went to the DHL site and entered it. No such number. Hopefully I skated this one. I have McAfee running, but I immediately ran a full scan and nothing turned up.

I got one last week that said I had been picked to be a i-phone 5 tester. All I had to do click on the provided link and enter code 1000. They also said when testing was done I could keep the phone. Good deal!
Just a heads up for everyone.

Sorry, Ozz.
And, so others know, we regularly get emails from the major shippers, including the U.S. Post Office of our packages in transit. Because we have received these emails in the past, we can usually recognize when we get a bogus one.
Also, we use MS Security Essentials and it has worked for us for the last year or so.

Got that same email here but I deleted it. I did not have any ups packages enroute so knew it was bogus.

Ozz, there is a folder called prefetch, its in the windows folder, C:/windows/prefetch.
A friend told me that lots of viruses hide in here. If you run MS security Essentials, or anything else, before you reboot, go into prefetch and delete all files and folders inside prefetch. You will see files start to reappear inside prefetch right after you delete them, its OK.
Do not delete the folder prefetch, just whats inside it.

I have noticed those are sent to more than one person. That was my flag it was bogus and probably virus related.

Thanks folks, it is devastating, really ruins a day.
I dropped it off in Phoenix, the nice guy said he probably could fix it,we shall see. $69.00
Kind of like driving down the road, one slip, even when you know better, and ....crash!!!
Been beating myself up all day. Sue, the sweethart she is, told me it was an honest mistake, and is fixable. Good to have a gal like that in a person's corner.

+1 regarding MS Security Essentials. Nortons is a resource hog.
I'm an IT professional and I use MS Security Essentials on all 3 laptops on my home network. It's free and has settings to automatically update on a schedule. I also suggest SuperAntispyware (free) as well as Malwarebytes (free).
Don't beat yourself up Ozz, even IT Pros get tripped up from time to time.

Not sure if this is where to ask this, but since computers/viruses have been brought up, who is running what on their computer to protect it?
Such as, North, McAfee, AVG, Superspyware, etc. And, with what results, or, how do you like it

The computer place called It's FIXED! $69.00 bucks. He said it is a virus going around that wipes stuff off the computer screen.
Yep.
The guy said he would have to take my Norton off to fix it, and he would put their protection on it for nothing.
I would think most of them are good, but I am the dummy that opened the door to the raging lion...
