Me? An RV Salesman????
What would you all think about me becoming an RV Salesman?? Been looking at finding a winter part time job and while at an RV show yestyerday I inquired about a job with one of the local RV Dealers. I spoke with the general manager and he was very interested and asked me to stop in on Tuesday afternoon.
Besides driving truck most of my working life was in some form of sales and marketing. I even tried my hand at selling Fords but that didn't work out as the boss was an a..
Anyway, My question.... Am I cut out to be an RV Salesman??

Hey Glenn, I can see you as an RV salesman. You have the personality and the gift of gab. If you can say "your truck can pull anything we have on the lot" then you should give it a shot. LOL

Glenn, absolutely. Helen and I did that for several years.Mainly RV shows and sportsman shows. Most dealers are happy to have you because you know the product and customers relate to you because you are more a camper than a salesman..and..you can not believe what you will learn about "the RV business". RV's are easier to sell than autos//Folks NEED a auto it is a necessity of life..When folks walk into the RV dealership they are there because they WANT a camper..it is a luxury item..you don't need to have one.. Take the job..it will be fun a learning experience and productive.

Glenn, With your knowledge and experience you're a natural! Just make sure you don't unfairly give preference to Montanas if you're trying to sell other brands. It could cut into your commissions. Sell a few Prevosts! Good Luck and keep us informed about your new career!

Do it!!!!A little extra cash in the pocket never hurt anyone, if you don't like the situation you have a choice, in the mean time they pay you for something you like to do and with your experience you should be a plus for anyone wanting to buy an RV.

Glenn,
Go for it! You know your stuff, have experience, and can probably help buyers more than the average salesman. I just hope the dealership sells Montanas, otherwise you may be at a disadvantage

I think you would be a great salesman Glenn. Most dealership's would be glad to have an expert in the field as a salesman. Heck you could probably teach the other slaesmen a few things.

Glenn, you can't loose. You can always quit! Wish we had more salesmen in this field that have actually pulled and used a 5th wheel. Good luck.
Happy trails................

Glenn, I think you would be an excellent RV salesman. You have the firsthand experience, you care about the individuals, and you have an outgoing personality.
I cannot imagine you lasting very long as a Ford salesman, though. Sooner or later they'd figure out you're sending potential customers across the street to the GM dealer!

Actually Steve, back than I did drive a Pontiac. They gave me an Escort as a demo so I kept the Pontiac at home. And that's another thing, for those who have met me, can you picture this frame in an Escort???
Thanks for all the great advice and encouragement. In all probabiliy I will take the job but when you here what brand I will be selling Please don't hold it against me. I'll fill ya all in on the details later.

Good Luck Glenn. Better not tell them about the MOC or you might loose a sale, that is if your not selling Montanas.

Glen, I think you'd do great. I would probably want to make sure my service manager/staff would stand firmly behind me, though. That might be the only catch I could see. Poor service after the sale would wreck any fun you might have had otherwise.

BINGO!, you hit the nail squarely on the head and I guess more than anything else that's where my problem lies. My ability to sell does not concern me a bit and I feel most RV manufacturers will stand behind their products. I am more concerned about the support I may or may not get "after the sale." I don't need an irate customer coming down on my back because of the service or should I say "lack of service" department. Just a couple years ago this dealership did not have the best reputation but now there is a new general manager and I can only hope he put out the trash.
Well it's like Parrothead said "Glenn, you can't loose. You can always quit!"

Here is another thing to keep in mind that is along the "support" line Being a part time salesman you may/will experience some resentment/lack of co-operation from the regular full time sales/service folks. You MAY/Will be viewed as someone who is retired has a livable income and does not really need the job thereby taking sales/income away from those who depend on this for a living. That is ONE reason we sort of focused on RV shows and sportsman shows because the dealer always needs extra help there. We also developed our own list of Clients from Friends, camper clubs, work. Talk about how you will be paid..Dealers may offer you a flat weekly salary and a low commission rate which may be good for a person who needs the regular paycheck no matter what. We opted for straight commission since we DO have a regular income..If you sell you get paid..worked for us.....

Glenn, is that the dealer who lost the Montana contract because of problems? I remember a few posts about that but don't recall the name of the dealer.
