Thanks Glenn.

Looking at this made me think. How many of you remember Veterans Day when you were young? I remember the American Legion and the VFW coming to the local schools presenting the Good Citizenship awards. The SOG (Sergeant of the Guard for the non military types) would introduce each member of the color guard telling us when and where they served. There were WWI,WWII, and Koren War Veterans. I sat mesmerized as each soldier, sailor, airman, marine was introduced. To actually see the heros who help keep our country free was spine chilling.

I truly think that the Veterans Day ceremony may subconsciously have had a huge influence on my decision to enlist in the armed forces in 1971.

Anyway, enough revisiting my youth. Thanks again Glenn.

In Flanders' Fields

In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.

John McCrae, 1915.

For those who served. Remember Stars and Stripes. I do. Here are
some pics submitted by solders in the field with a brief caption
http://www.stripes.com/webpages.asp?id=100
These pics are updated for each printed edition.

May God bless our troups and bring them home safe.

In addition while honoring our men / women in service past and present. No matter what your personal opinion is of our commander in chief. Please support our troups.

If you happen to be driving around and see a blue star banner displayed on a vehicle. Thank that parent for their son or daughters service. Patriotism at its best.

See the link for an example of the bluestar banner.

If any of you or your fathers served in WW II be sure and register on the web site for the new World War II memorial. It is for anyone who served in the war. The site is wwIImemorial.com. I have both of our fathers registered.
Happy trails...............

I too want to add my sincere gratitude to those who have served and to those who are serving today to preserve the freedom that my family and I enjoy. I am especially grateful to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. May God bless all the men and women in uniform and their families at home.

We will be going to a funeral tonite for one William A. Johnston, Jr during WWII a member of the 99th pursuit squadron otherwise known as the Tuskegee Airman.I had the pleasure of working alongside him for 20 years 1962-1982 He was a FAA air traffic controller,FAA accident prevention counselor, Corporate pilot, FAA pilot test examiner,Flight instructor. Member of the board of directors Tuskegee airman, Ohio chapter , not to mention a amateur radio operator and one of the finest men I have ever known. His aviation experiences could hold you spellbound for hours. He defied all odds to do what he did and become who he was yet I never heard him utter a single negative word about the USA . We had many of these aviation warriors in the FAA during this time period.Folks who flew P-47 Thunderbolts, B-17's , B-29's during WWII. One who flew the Ploesti oil field raid in 1943 at tree top level and below. They flew into the target area with a nearly brand new B-24 and came out the other side in a piece of junk. Not a single crew member was hurt and they returned safely..The B-24 was scrapped. They are, all of them gone now. But the stories and what they did for all of us remain...

Rich
How fortunate you were to have known this great human being. I wish I had written down the stories my Dad told of his times during the war. He didn't talk about them much but when he did it was awesome. He was a Lt.Col. and served under Ike in North Africa and Italy. I have to heart some of his stories but others are gone forever. He is buried in the National Cemetery in Riverside CA.

Sue, my father also served in Italy and North Africa in WWII. My parents were married in May 1945 and I was born a year later. Roy served in the early days of Vietnam but was stationed in Japan and Taiwan for the Air Force. Thanks for the information on registering for WWII.

My father is registered, also.

Every time I see Tuskegee, AL, on the map when I'm planning routes I think some day I want to stop there for a few days and see what historical things there are to see, especially connected with the Airmen. I AM going to do this, it's just a matter of when we next get to that area.

Nancy,
Was your father in the Army? What division? What was his assignment. My Dad had the motor pool on one stint and the ammunition on another.
Happy trails.................
