Crummy carpet replace with vinyl? Y or N?

Between campsites with gritty gravel/sand and 3 dogs, we are finding out the dirt-colored, shag carpet just isn't holding up. When we vacuum, the clear dust bin shows it is collecting a lot of dirt, hair and carpet fibers. I'm thinking about removing the carpet and putting in Traffic Master Allure vinyl planking (Home Depot) and using throw rugs. Has anyone out there done this? Was it a job for a DYI-er? Did you have to remove the linoleum in the kitchen and baths? Or did you go right over it? Was there a problem with the slides in either removing the carpet or laying down the vinyl? Did the slide catch it while retracting? If I didn't chose to do it, could a RV dealer? Thanks.

We had a flooring guy do ours and installed a composite tile that they use for entrances to apartment buildings. We just did it this summer, but so far no problems with the slides. They did take up the roll goods that were on the kitchen floor, but we left the bathroom and bedroom the way they were. In order to put it in the bedroom correctly we would have had to take the bed apart and put it back together. The carpet in the bedroom and the linoleum in the bathroom are fine right now, but when they get bad we will probably do that.

I have put the Allure down in our S&B, and love it. Great product. Wwe installed it in my SIL's motorhome, and it looks great, but it doesn't have slides, so can't help you there. It does require trimming out with shoe mold or quarter round. JT

I agree that this is crummy/cheap carpet but I do have to wonder if ANYTHING would hold up to 3 dogs in such a small space.

I just want to say no matter what, find a way to forge ahead with replacing as much carpet as you can. With our new 3610 the only place we have carpet in the living/kitchen is under the dining table and if they would have offered a delete option on that we would have gone for that too.

Keeping our new plank flooring clean is a breeze and we haven't missed all that carpet for one second.

We asked for no carpet when we ordered ours but were told there were no options to modify. As we've only used ours for 5 days at this point I don't want to start major mods just yet but I can see us ripping the carpet out from under the couch at the back of the unit. I expect/hope that the vinyl from the kitchen/ l/r will run right thru to the back. Would be nice to be able to get matching vinyl cause when the carpet become dirty and worn I won't be replacing with new carpet. Then it will be vinyl throughout.

I thought there was an earlier post that the Allure won't hold up to the change in temps and ripples. Might want to do a search on the MOC. Like u I would give up the carpet in a heart beat. In our previous Monty we replaced the vinyl with laminate flooring. It worked great even at the slides. But we now have our appliances in a slide and it doesn't give the room needed for laminate that the other slides do so that's not possible with our present unit. I did love it though! Good luck.

Thanks for your opinions. Just to add to the discussion: 1. We have 3 toy poodles. I shed more hair than they do! 2. The Allure flooring planks floats - meaning each plank has an adhesive flange that sticks to the adjoining plank. No adhesive is attached to the floor. 3. We took a tour of the Montana factory and don't remember if before they start construction, if they lay the linoleum first and build on top of it. 4. We have laminate in our house and I know if water puddles on it for any length of time, it seeps into the joint and expands the particle board underneath.

We do not have dogs or cats and I do not know how Helen did it but she cleaned the carpet twice a year and used throw rugs in high used areas. The carpet in our 06 3400 still ,looked very good and when we traded it they thought we had replaced it.

We have our carpets cleaned about once a year by a fellow in Ft Lauderdale that does it commercially and they still look good. We have 2 dogs and a cat.

Wife would still like to have all hard floor of some kind. Let us know how you make out.

I put down Allure planking in our Monty 4 years ago..we have been in 10 degree weather to 107 with no problems..no wrinkles or anything.. We love it.,

What type of carpet cleaner do you use? The spray can type or a wet system like you use in a home where it takes most of a day to dry. My wife uses Stanley Steamer for home carpet, but didn't know if this could be used on RV carpet.

We have been happy with the carpet so far, of course, no animals. My only concern would be, I've noticed that when the large door side slide is out, the carpet covers the gaps at either end. You can pick up the flap of carpet and see below the slide. How is this handled with a solid flooring material?

The fellow we use uses a commercial steam system that heats the steam to a temperature that makes it “dry” steam. The carpet dries in just an hour or so when running both AC units.

We have had the carpet cleaned this way 7 times in 5 years (once a year and 2 accidents) without any apparent damage to the carpet or floor.
