High capacity transmission pan
Has anyone installed a high capacity transmission oil pan on their automatic transmission? Something like this: http://www.xtremediesel.com/mag-hyte...issionpan.aspx ?
It adds 5 to 8 extra quarts of fluid and increases cooling ability for the tranny. I am planning a trip to Arizona later this year and was thinking it might be a good idea to help protect my tranny from the heat. Opinions are appreciated.

Though I don't have one (yet), it's on my want list.
I can see where the higher capacity would be beneficial as there is more fluid to absorb/disperse the heat. The MagHytec pans and covers are made of aluminum which transfers the heat faster than stamped steel and it also has fins that aid cooling. In high heat situations, this is a good thing. I would think that this will help extend the life of the tranny and lengthen the time between fluid changes. I see no down side to installing one other than you'll be a bit lighter in the wallet.

According to the temperature display in the truck the allison seems to averaging 140 - 150 degrees F while towing the monty. While towing up severe inclines like the Rocky Mtns the temperature goes to 180 degrees F. I'm not sure if these are normal average temperatures, but I assume a larger pan wouldn't be of much benefit.
Are other GMC truck owners getting similar temperatures?

I have installed a larger pan on my tranny. I takes 3 more quarts of fluid. I also has tubes that run through the bottom of the pan all the way through the pan so air can flow through. With the aftermarket larger tru cool trans cooler and the pan my trans does run alittle coller.

I am running the Mag Hytec DD (Double Deep) pan on my Ram with synthetic fluid of course and no problems.
Hard to quantify how much cooler it runs, but I just thought it would help to have more fluid and better cooling with the aluminum pan w/cooling fins.
Also running the rear diff cover for the same reason. Very nice quality pieces!

I have the A/T Deep Pan on our '95 F-250. Did this after many transmission snafus.

Thanks for all the replies. I have an '08 F350 w/6.4 diesel. It has a factory trans. temp "idiot" gauge. I installed a real temp gauge and have seen my trans. temp go to nearly 200 degrees on a hot day pulling a long hill. That's not too bad. Normal running temp seems to be about 180. But I always worry about a trans. failure so I was exploring the bigger pan.

I agree...200 degrees doesn't seem bad under extreme conditions.
Definitely want to run the best quality synthetic fluid too...of course with the double deep pan I have that gets real expensive!

King, what synthetic fluid do you use?

Actually for my truck, the dealers all use synthetic specifically formulated for Dodge/Chrysler (it's ATF+4) and it's supposed to be really good so I just do that.
I would check either Royal Purple or Amsoil and check for your specific application. Any of the better synthetics should be fine IMO.

Be careful replacing your Ford SP fluid with anything but Ford fluid. Unless it changed in the last few years only Ford SP and now their new fluid is approved for Ford's 5R120 transmission. Other fluids can and will damage your transmission. So before you change to something different check to see if it is OK to use.

I have the Mag on the trans and the rear axle. Don't think it will lower the temps that much but it will keep the the peaks temps in checks. They will extend your change times. I run Schaeffer oil in the rear end, TranSynd in trany. My biggest help was to add a bigger trans cooler in front of the radiator.

I have never noted a transmission temperature that concerned me towing here in the West with some pretty good hills to cross. I am glad about that. So, for now, I have no reason to think of getting a larger load of transmission fluid.

I have a larger pan on our Dodge. It holds an extra gallon of ATF. I would think that having more fluid will let it run cooler longer. On a really long hard pull it will most likely reach the same peak temp as the stock pan.

You are right; deeper pan, more oil; more oil makes it run cooler.
