brake contoler upgrade

I currently have a Hayes Lemmerez Energize III that I used for a 7700 lb Alpenlite but just ordered a new 2955RL that may get to about 13K. It worked fine for Alpenlite but is it OK for the bigger load. Do know much of anything about them but I want to be safe. Thanks in advance.

We have the Prodigy Controller by Tekonsha and it works very well with our rig which is the same as yours. Others will chime in with others, so check them all out before you decide to get a new one.

I didn't know the brake controllers were weight sensitive. I thought they just sent electrical signals for the trailer's brakes to do their job. I don't believe they should be affected by a trailer's weight since the trailer's brakes designed for the load are doing the actual braking. On the brake controllers I've used there is a setting to control the sensitivity for how much pressure for the trailer to apply to its brakes - hopefully your Hayes does the same thing. Can anyone else provide the facts on how this works?

Check on this because it may not be necessary to change it out.

But if you want to upgrade, I had an after-market Prodigy in my old truck and it was great. In fact, in my new Truck I have an Integrated Controller provided by Ford and I read somewhere it is OEM'd from Prodigy. So far, for everyone that has chimed in, they have covered the ones I hear about the most.

It is kind of like matching truck to load. You can use a large truck to pull a small load, but never use a small truck to pull a large load. As for your controller settings, all you probably will have to do is turn down the setting. Always check to see that your controller is rated for load weight and number of axles.

I use Brakesmart and love it. It is intregrated into the hydrolic brake line and the more pressure you apply to the brakes, the more that goes to trailer. Great setup.

I have a TruBrake by Hensley that I am going to change out in my Dodge. However, the controller you have should work fine, it might need to be re-calibrated

Iv'e had Kelsye Hays that worked off the hydrolic flued from the TV brake system, one no name I cant remember, then the Prodigy which compaired to the other two was like a cutlass to a wooden knife, then to the P-3 which has my vote, there will probably be another pushing its way to the top, but as of now I'm very happy with its preformance. the best feature I like is the selectability of voltage to the rear trailer brakes.
