slide out

i was wondering if anyone had there wire cable break on there slide out ? and if so is it much of a job to replace it. looks like you have to take the under belly off to get to it. 2001 big sky thank you. did not make myself clear, it is the wire cable that makes the slide go in & out evenly. it is under the slide an runs on pulleys. must be hooked to some kind of motor in the under belly.

Are you talking about the flexible support that holds the wiring harness under the slideout? If so, some have used wire ties to repair, while others, like me, used a gate hinge.

As Chris stated, the stainless gate hinge is the fix most MOCers have used.

After the rash of breakages reported in this forum a couple of years ago I bought the hinges and bolts but have not yet installed them nor had one break. One of these days...

From everything I've heard, the hinges solve the problem nicely.

I used a piece of rubber cut from an old semi-truck mud flap to fix ours. The reason I didn't use the hinge fix is because I didn't think of it! Anyway, the rubber worked and is holding up fine, plus it's black so it kind of blends in.

I just gotta wonder, this is a 2001 unit, is the OP really asking about the wiring harness??

did Keystone always use the same slide mechanisms??

No, Mine is an '01 also and it has a cable that runs along the main frame and the pulleys to the outside of the slide frame and then back inside the main frame. Blonniew, you will have to lower the black belly in order to fix the cable. Draw yourself a diagram of which way it runs and which way you pull it out. Measure it and get a new one. Probably going to need some cable clamps, I think the old cable has crimped on clamps. You may even be able to get one from Keystone if you have time. Hope this helps. JP

Just explaining a little slideout history here. I had a 2000 2850RK that had a cable bringing the main slide out also. The cable was drawn back and forth with a cylinder above the belly pan between the frame rails. The other end of the cable was threaded through a few pulleys and anchored to the slideout itself. A few years later Lippert came up with the gear rack connected by a cross shaft ... most of us have that setup now. The gear racks and crosshaft allow the slide to extend and retract evenly with just one hydraulic cylinder attached to one end. As mentioned, you'll have to get the correct length on the cable and the correct rigging configuration to make it work correctly. I don't remember the size of cable ... 5/16" ... 3/8" ??????

Carol, the 2001 may have been a typo. If I recall, the Big Sky didn't come out until 2003. Maybe the original poster can update this for us.
