Workamping at CAL-AM Resorts

We've been getting a few emails about Workamping opportunities at Can-Am Resorts in Arizona which we're considering. Has anyone had any experience Workamping with Cal-Am and if so I'd appreciate any feedback or advice.

They've been after us also, but we already have a gig for this winter so we didn't investigate further. I'm familiar with a couple of the resorts, but don't know anyone who has worked there. Hopefully someone will be along soon with some experience to enlighten both of us.

Do you happen to mean Cal-Am Resorts? (not Can-Am?) If so, we workamped there and can give you the scoop. Which campground, specifically (if, in fact, it's Cal-Am).

Any info about workcamping from anyone on here would be greatly appreciated! I am thinking about giving up working fulltime sooner rather than later and would like to make a few bucks to support my fulltimin lifestyle, no more than 20-25 hrs a week!

If it is Cal-AM they took over Fortuna De Oro in Yuma this past year and have sunk a lot of money into it and from what I understand they have seven more parks around Phoenix. They don't seem to be afraid to invest in a park. lots of improvements in Yuma.

I've read your blog on your Workamping experience. It sounds as if you both enjoyed it and felt that it's fair trade for what you received. Any negatives?

Hi again,
Great. We liked what we did - I (Suzanne) taught sign language and Brad worked for Mikki Bonner (GREAT, GREAT person) on the "Decor Team." We met fabulous people and did enjoy our time there - would go back again if wanted to be in the Phoenix area again. Still on the positives - you can use any/all facilities in any Cal-Am park, there are a few discounts (food, shows), but can't remember exactly how much, and Mikki (again, if that's who's hiring you, unless it's Starr?? Also GREAT!!!) treated the workampers extremely well! Only negatives: do you have a dog? We stayed in Mesa Regal and there are only specific roads that dogs can be walked. It was a pain in the *&$. Also, even when we stuck to the dog-specific roads, some people gave us a hard time. (I, Suzanne, gave it right back. Brad's the nicer one of the two of us. ) Of course, this may not be an issue for you. Most people living in the park were friendly and accepting of workampers/RV'ers (there are some people living in park models), although we did hear a few stories from fellow workampers that this wasn't the case for them, but it may have been the attitude of the workampers and not the residents......
I can't think of anything else right off the bat. Any specific questions? Feel free to PM me or we can chat on the phone as well - do you know where you'll work? What you'll do? All that??

If you don't have a green card and someone reports you, you will be deported. Our camp owner was coming across the border and told them he was going to his campground to cook hamburgers for his members they told him if he did he would be deported for working and taking a job away from a US citizen.

Actually, "volunteering" does not require a green card and if the place you're volunteering does not issue a W2 for your volunteer hours (which few do) then no problem. The last thing we as workampers want to do is take a paying job away from a resident citizen. I don't feel we're doing that. In fact we're adding value to the US economy by taking nothing and giving a lot. Then of course there's the thousands of $$$ we spend while we're enjoying the hospitality of our friends south of 49!
