Diesel F150
For those that want to down size. Ford is coming out with a new F150 3.6 liter diesel. The diesel engine is currently used in the Land Rover which gets around 31 mpg highway, solo. It's scheduled to come out in 2009. For real mileage, how about the European VW diesel sub compact called Polo @ 74.3 mpg highway. From the January issue of Popular Mechanics.

Jerry, I would do the little diesel if they put it in the SUV. Hopefully it doesn't sound like a British taxi  .
My daughter has the 50mpg diesel VW and loves it. Can't remember the name. It can't quite do 50mpg at altitude all the time, but then neither can I!

Own an 05 Jetta TDI ... love the little car ... 41 - 46 MPG any day of the week depending on the mix of city/hiway driving. Only downside is it takes a while to get up to temperature on cold days, but I just turn up the heated seat setting.

I think the Jetta only gets 24 mpg when towing a 3400RL, according to the EPA anyway.

Of course this new "little diesel" can pull any Montana they make! Stopping. Who worries about stopping? Some of the weight police maybe but the rest of us know we can make it work. Where do we sign up?

No doubt the firestone people will have a set of those ride right airbags and maybe Popular Mechanics will have an issue on how to convert your F-150 to a dually version. So there should be no problem pulling that 3400.

The Jetta squats a little low when pulling a 3400. Also, there is no room in the back seat. So I've been told! :-)

Right now, diesel is 19% higher than regular unleaded here in the midwest ... My previous vehicle got avg 22 mpg ... my jetta gets avg 43 mpg or approx 100% increase in mpg ... do the math!

You can also buy a Honda or Toyota and get the same or better milage using regular gas. That's 19% savings.

I don't buy a Diesel to get fuel mileage, I buy them for their towing ability. Just look at the Torq on a Diesel vs Gas engine. The small Diesel that GM and Ford are going to produce will not be for towing heavy loads. I think Ford will be 3.6 liter and the GM will be 4.5 liter, but they both will be in half ton and below. Towing ability will be very low. You want be able to tow most 5th wheels. If we could ever get the Tree huggers and the EPA off our backs we would have a lot better fuel mileage than we have now. I will stay with the Duramax with 365 hp as long as I can. GBY.....

Yep, the Honda and Toyota may get better gas mileage but hook up 12,000 to one and see what happens to their trucks.
I'm with Delaine and Lindy, I didn't buy a diesel for fuel mileage I bought it for brute strength and durability. The Duramax I have now has more HP and Torque than my first Diesel Pusher M/H with a Cummins 5.9 ISB engine (285 HP & 660 Torque.) Imagine the difference in performance.
If you are looking for a diesel to get fantasic gas mileage then go with a gas 1/2 ton and pull a tear drop trailer. You'll get good mileage.
Yes there are bio diesels than can run on fast food oil. There known as "French Fry Diesels" because of the smell from the exhaust. The more you drive the more you want a burger and fries.
The LMM Duramax is one of those diesels.
