additives for new Ford

Have had my new 2015 F350 Platinum for about two months now. Towed with it twice. What a beast compared to my 1999 F250 Diesel! Sold it last week-first guy that looked at it jumped on it. Surprised how much it was still worth! Question for the group-on someone's recommendation I used Stanadyne Diesel additive in the 1999 routinely. I know it increased mileage and performance, especially when towing. Anyone with a late model Ford Diesel using it? I don't want to harm the engine, but it sure helped my 1999. TIA.

I do not use your product which does get high marks; When I bought my 6.7, Ford service manager told me the product Ford sells is the same as what I was using from Walmart, which I have been using since 2008. He also stressed the need for the additive, because of potentially low octane levels at the pump and for lubrication. I add faithfully at each fillup. And yes, that 6.7 with the six speed tranny soundly beats my past three Ford Diesels and I thought each of them was great.

I use Diesel Klein at almost every fill up. I actually tried some of the Ford brand just because I had a coupon. It may be the same stuff but I swear I lost mileage with it. It appeared to help recently when I got stuck using B-20 out in California. Or at least I didn't notice much of a dip in mileage.

I am a Lucas Oil products, believer. I use it every time I fill up. Used in my 7.3 and that engine purred for 250,000 miles. New owner has put another 100k on her. Stuff works IMHO.

I just found this on another forum:

"I don't know how far and wide Atwood stores are, but they are having a sale until 8/31 on their Power Service Diesel Kleen for about $4 lower than Wal Mart for the 80 oz/250 gal size. www.atwoods.com"

Additives are not required for opperation of your truck with the exception of very cold weather and only having #2 diesel available(see manual).
I do reccomend using an additive in most situations, but keep in mind that many over the road truckers have gone millions miles without ever adding any treatment to there fuel system. The trucks also run almost every day.

So why use a fuel treatment?
1) Control small amounts of water/condensation that gets into the fuel system to prevent fuel system deterioration.
2) Control bacterial growth.
3) Add lubrication to ULSD fuel to protect the HPFP.
4) Promote cleaner burning of fuel to reduce exhaust particulates.
5) Help reduce internal engine deposits from bio diesel.
6) Improve fuel efficancy.

This is only a few reasons. Other things that make fuel treatments more important are, if the vehicle sits for long periods, cold weather, bio fuels.

Not all additives are created equal. NEVER use and additive that contains alchohol, or is labled "for use in gas or diesel engines". I have tried a few differant additives and this is what I like best so far. http://www.xtremediesel.com/XDP-Dies...-Additive.aspx

The Bosch CP4.2 pump is very sensitive to water and you do not want to use anything that will keep the water in suspension. Water damage to a Ford fuel system is not covered by Ford Warranty. You would have to submit under your vehicle insurance as a comprehensive claim. Damage is usually in the $9,000-$11,000 range.

The pump can fail and you never get a water in fuel light on.

Both Ford and GM uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump. Cummings uses a Bosch CP3.3 pump.

Do your own research on Diesel Fuel SCAR ratings and the fuel requirements of the different Bosch fuel pumps.

Google "6.7 Ford Fuel Job Aid" and read thru 25 pages of water damage pics in a pdf file. It is a 1.28M file so too large to post here.

Good post!

I'll add a few things if you don't mind. The only product GM advised using was Stanadyne, and that was in 2006. I haven't gotten through my new manual to see if that's still true. I'll reiterate: one thing to avoid like the plague is any product with alcohol in it as it can damage seals in the fuel system. An additive to add lubricity to the fuel is IMHO, important. This can help prolong the life of both the pump and injectors. Like others here, I use Opti-Lube for this purpose. One other reason to use an additive is in extremely cold weather diesel fuel can jell, especially if it contains any bio fuel. If you live in a warm climate, this isn't a problem, but if you travel to a cold climate on fuel you bought in a warm place, you could run into trouble. In such a case, consider adding an anti gelling additive, at least until you can fill up with local fuel which will already be blended for non-gelling.
