With three trailers, you want to make sure to get in early or call ahead for reservations. There are two in our party and it can get dicey if you get there late, especially places like Liard Hot Springs with limited camping sites. We also enjoyed the talks at last year's rally. The campground book that was mentioned there is out of publication, but I found one through Amazon. It is a good resource to have along. We used our first Tour Saver coupon today for a free quarter pound of fudge. It will offset the much higher diesel prices this year - up to almost $8/gallon in Canada.

Thanks so much for allowing us to shirt tail your trip. I am enjoying it so much. Don't have a trip that extensive in the planning since buying the new house in Florida, but like they say, never say never. For now I will sit back and dream. Susie and her Husband that passed away 7 years ago, did a 33 day tour to Alaska as one of his last wishes, and we have many books of pictures, so in reading your blog's, I am looking thru the books and pretending I'm there. Enjoy your trip, we'll be right here peeking in. Happy Trails, Steve and Susie

Steve, right now it looks like clouds. Flooding in Denali (we'll be there Sunday) had some evacuations yesterday. This is day 43 for us and we are at our northern most point. Still having a blast. Yesterday, we went to the museum of the North at Fairbanks.

Ron and Terrie,

Wishing you safe travels as you make your way up to the great white north...I curiously noted that you will be up there 100 days.....we were considering workamping up there but then saw this...

http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/vip/host.htm

The note requirement for folks there more than 60 days.

Have you looked at this and how it might affect you?

Les

I think the key word there would be "residing" in Alaska. Many states have laws relating to their driver's license and registration requirements. I visited Florida last year and stayed for 3 months. This year we will visit and stay for 4 months. I do not reside in Florida so they don't make me get a driver's license in their state nor register my truck and fiver.

Reading the site you provided about work camping in Alaska, it makes me wonder if they really want to discourage campers from the lower 48 from applying and would rather have native Alaska folks who are actually familiar with the area up there. Just a guess.

JandC,

I agree it sounds like they are looking to discourage folks from the lower 48 from working up there but when I went to the state statutes if clearly notes that if you are a non resident that is visiting and your license and registations are from your home state you get a 60 day exemption regardless if you are residing there. Now if you are workamping it is pretty easy to pin you down in a specific area but if you are roaming fron campground to campground it might be harder to track. My wife commented that this maybe the reason that the workamping commitments only run 4 to 6 weeks.
Either way....pretty frightening that a state like Alaska would have this type of regulation.

We'll be in Talkeetna over the 4th of July weekend. Holler if anyone is rolling by.

We are in Anchorage and haven't been anywhere more than five days. That almost changed today. Broken springs on the Montana - again.

Well, we are into our third month on the road here in Alaska. We still aren't sure if we have truly had an 80 degree day yet this year. High 70's a couple of times for sure. A lot of the coastal area of Alaska is rain forest. So, we've seen some misty, cloudy and sometimes rainy days. But, we have had beautiful sunshine like we did today. And, there have been surprises to our agenda. Last night was spent watching pink salmon return from the sea to the fish weir at the hatchery in Valdez. There were lots of people waiting to see them - along with stellar sea lions, bald and golden eagles, otters, (bears but we haven't seen any), and sea gulls. Great pictures on my blog if you want to see them. Eagles carrying away fish, sea lions swinging fish in their mouths, bald and golden eagles fighting over territory and salmon trying to finish their life the way they were intended. Next up is the Stan Stevens cruise to Columbia Glacier and then we take our show on the road to McCarthy, Alaska. One of the few places in our country's largest national park that you can actually drive to - Wrangell-St. Elias. Then we have some backtracking to do to get to Haines and then Skagway. Our last stop in Alaska will be in Hyder to watch the bears feasting at Fish Creek. We need to savor this last month. And the rally is just around the corner. By the way, I am averaging 98 photos per day, we have gone a little over 7100 miles and diesel has averaged 4.88/gallon. If you are thinking about traveling to Alaska, consider signing up for the Fall Rally in Goshen and come find out about our trip and let us try to answer your questions.

Busterwms -
We have been to just about every city in Alaska that can be driven to from Fairbanks south. We were in Haines yesterday and tomorrow is Skagway. Our last Alaskan visit will be in Hyder, described as "a little quirky". It has been a great trip so far, these past 74 days. We will be home in less than a month now. In some ways, it seems the trip just started, and in other ways it seems like we have been gone forever. We have experienced snow, rain and earthquakes. We have caught and eaten fresh halibut and sockeye salmon. We have seen glaciers, bears, orcas, wolves, foxes, moose, caribou and enough snowcapped mountains to fill my memory card. It is still the last frontier in many ways. There are still areas without electricity, plumbing or other everyday services that we take for granted. We are thankful for everyone that shared their Alaskan wisdom with us over the last 8 years as we planned this trip and hope that we can help others in a similar manner.
