I've put to use the empty 2 1/2 gallon DEG jugs. I fill them with water and attach a bungy cord to it that is approximately 6 ft long. It has hooks on both ends and I hook one end of the bungy over the axle of the roller and the other end gets clipped through the handle on the DEP jug. If the wind comes up the bungies absorb the lift IF the wind is light. If it starts to gust the hooks come off easy from the awning and the awning comes in. We never leave the awning out if we leave and normally roll it in in at night.

I drive a couple of 18" eyebolts into the ground (These are used to anchor cables to phone poles) and then use the 1.5" wide ratchet straps from HF. We generally try to put the rig up if there are high winds forecast but we've been caught in a handful of popup thunderstorms and (so far) no issues in gusts up to 70kts. (no issues with the awning that is, my nerves were running faster than the wind)

We tie our electric awning down with the kit from Walmart. We have been in 20 mph winds and everything has worked just fine.

@Denny and Angie Miller,
I’m curious how do you pull down the water dumping arms? Can you add a pic?
TIA.

We do nothing to our electric awning. When the wind picks up a push of a toggle switch will bring it up. When we leave the RV the awning comes up.

This is the set up I use except I don't pull them down. I just put a bit of tension on the cargo straps and the water dump still functions. Anytime the wind is going above 15 or so or we leave the CG the awning comes in. As the optimistic building jumper said on the way down, "so far so good".

Awning arms normal position, not 'pulled down' on the top...
Awning arms 'pulled down' on the bottom...
Just realize locking the arms in the 'down' position defeats the water dump feature. While I haven't had any issues with water pooling on our awning with the arms pulled down, you will need to monitor your set up during heavy rain. Our awning appears to have enough slope to shed water and not need the water dump feature---so far. I am still testing this set up. We have lost an awning before (on a previous coach) due to water pooling, and it isn't fun, or cheap. Cost us around $1100 just for the part, I did the work myself.
