Three recall items on my '08 Ford

I have ignored the notices sent to me, I figured I would have issues by now, that they would take care of at the time of the recall notice.
I now have 3 items for them to repair; (Recall items), Fuel tank something, cooling system something, and reprogram my PCM, whatever that is.
The recall No. is 08C04 08B06

I suggest that you have them fixed. If not they could say Good-by warranty. The PCM IS THE COMPUTER THAT RUNS THE TRUCK. Being a recall Ford will fix them no charge I believe.

Yep, I have an appointment for Friday.
I'm thinking that PCM would be a good thing to have updated! Hope it improves my 13 MPG, (around town)
How are you feeling Mickey?

The fuel tank recall is a strap that helps secure the fuel tank in the event of a collision. The cooling system is a repair that prevents a radiator leak. The reprogram has to do with some driveabilty issues and updates. Some claim an improvement in mpgs after the update.

Thank you KMH. I was wondering. Which of the seven radiators is it?
I tell people it has seven radiators, and their eyes get big.
I still have a 1976 Chevy 3/4 ton truck I bought new. I look under the hood with the Chevy and wonder why the new ones are so crammed full of 'stuff'.

Ozz, check a Diesel Stop forum. Some people are having problem after reflash. I am thinking to get that reflash myself, but after
reading about the problems that people have I have a second thoughts about it. What PCM reflash does is that computer will tell
you that your truck is going into regeneration mode. I will wait and see what will happen when more people will post their stories
after that reflash.

Going to have a skin graft on the 6 of Jan and then hopefully everything will be OK. Trying to be in TX the 1 of Feb. Other then that the leg is fine. Hope the recalls work out for you. Mileage should get better when we go back to summer blend of diesel.

Yep, probably 2/3 of what's under your hood is needed to propel your truck. The other 1/3 is needed to please the environmentalists. When I get all of my new HHO system installed and working properly, I will have lower emmissions than any new 2008 diesel along with just as much if not more power with less turbo lag and better fuel economy.

I'm not 100% sure how Ford works, but if you take a GM in for anything, they will do the recalls. No choice. They had a fuel filter recall a few years back that might or might not have affected their injector warranty. That one was a win win for the little guy.

I took my truck in at 7:00 this morning, they worked on it, doing all the recalls and even checked the truck out, brakes, fluids, tires and so-on. I just got it back.
My only gripe with them, and every one else I have taken my trucks to, is that they never lock the doors.
I removed most everything from it that would be a theft item, but I still would like it locked. I tell them, but it just doesn't get done. At least it didn't have any door-dings in it.

Jerzy,
I just drove it home, and haven't been anywhere yet, so no news. I did get a letter from Ford explaining why the computer re-flash,I'll see if I can find it on the Internet.

Thanks Ozz for a info. I did not get a recall letter from Ford yet. There are a lots of forums and people telling a lot of stories about
that reflash. I think in this forum we can get the most honest opinions about this matter.

I had the re-flash done to my 2008 F250 6.4L in November when it first came out and before it was halted due to TCM destruction (my TCM was fine afterward).

There has been no significant effect on mileage or performance that I can tell. I have driven about 1500 miles since. About half was commute to work (stop and go type traffic) and half pulling the Montana to Quartzsite. The around town mileage sucks just as it did before. It may be slightly worse, but it is hard to tell since the commute has been really ugly for the last month (one night it took 1.5 hours to go two miles - lots of idling). My towing mileage is very close to what I recorded last year over the same route. So it appears the re-flash didn't adversely affect me.

The most noticeable change is the new display message when ever the truck cleans the exhaust filter. The message is clearly displayed (and remains displayed unless "cleared") the entire time an active re-generation is occurring. It is obvious the concept of "passive re-generation" where the "drive it like you stole it" hard towing mode of operation keeps the exhaust gas temperatures high enough to burn off the particulates is bogus.

The harder the engine works, the more dirty exhaust (i.e black smoke and particulates) it produces. All of which is trapped in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). An Active Re-generation is where diesel fuel is introduced into the the exhaust system in order to raise the temperature enough to "burn off" the accumulated junk.

Driving around town, where the engine is basically loafing, results in an active re-generation every 200-300 miles. However while towing the Montana I found it was doing an active re-generation as often as 90 miles. In fact one occurred shortly after I crested the Tehachapi Mountains (for those that know Southern CA and Hwy-58) where we had pulled a fairly long and significant grade (6%). If high exhaust temps would clean the DPF, then this was the route that would have done it.

I suspect most folks were previously unable to detect how often a re-generation actually occurred. In most cases, there wasn't any obvious signs. Now, you will know and it may surprise you.

Carl, thanks for sharing your experience and your observations. I heard a lot of horror stories about that reflash. Our trucks aren't the most
efficient trucks out there. I always knew when the regeneration was happening, because the truck was loosing some power, exhaust sounded like
a Concord during the take off and the the fuel mileage was going down like our economy. I was quietly hoping that Ford was coming with the
upgrade that was reducing regen intervals. I am getting about 11 miles to a gallon around the town, 18 miles hwy and 10.5 mile towing.
I thing these numbers are consistent with the other truck like ours out there.

Happy travels.

That is pretty much what I get too. Not pretty, but it is what it is!

I just got a recall from Ford for the installation of a Cooling System Venturi Tee Kit on the radiator and for the re-flash.

My truck was built in early January 2008 but I am getting messages when the re-gen is taking place. One time I got the "Drive To Clean Exhaust Filter", "Cleaning Exhaust Filter", and "Exhaust Filter Drive Complete" messages. This re-flash is supposed to be to allow these messages to display in the driver info center. I wonder why I am getting them already and others are not. Are all F250 diesels not built in the Kentucky truck plant? Maybe my truck got the new flash at the time it was built. Just a little confusing. Anybody got any ideas?

I have had all of the recalls done, including the PCM reflash. There have been no ill effects. My regen schedule is typically after a tank of fuel or more. That's with a mix of stop/go and interstate driving.
