Carrying extra diesel fuel??

Anyone know if it's legal to carry extra 5gal. diesel fuel cans in the back of truck bed? We are taking a trip in 1 week to Yellowstone Park and Mt. Rushmore (from Alabama) and have no time to get a tank for bed or replacement for factory tank before we leave. We're afraid that 29 gal. tank might not get us safely to fuel in some parts of the West. We're pulling a 3400RL with a 2006Ford F250SD 4x4 Crewcab and know the gas milage will be murder. BTW, we just recently got the Montana...that is why we dont have the gas tank extra yet.

Any help will be appreciated....or is you know where to find this info would be great.

We carried three 5 gal. cans of gasoline on a portion of a trip to Utah (just in case). Certainly not recommended, but I felt I may need it. As soon as we felt it was no longer needed, I simply put it in the tank.
