B&W Hitch Assembly Advice Needed

Hello All,

I am assembling a new B&W Hitch model 3300 into a 2017 Ford F350 Super Duty crew cab long bed dually with the Ford puck option. My Montana is a 2017 3820 FK (front kitchen).

Here is where I need input: I can assemble the hitch so that it is 3" in front of the axle (closest to cab) or 1" in front of the axle farthest from cab. With the long bed and the cut back front cap of the Montana I don't anticipate any clearance issues in either case.

I would like to hear from others on which position they installed their B&W hitch, closest to the cab or farthest from the cab and why, what was the reasoning.

Thanks for your feedback

Close to put a little more weight on the front of the truck.

Remember, the more forward the hitch, the closer the tailgate is to the trailer. Having the tailgate down when hitching up may be limited in the angle that you can approach. Normally not a problem when you can back straight in. But in those sites which require the truck to be at an angle, it can be too close. Also, once hitched, do you ever anticipate trying to access the front compartment (garage)? Opening the door to pull out that compressor, lug wrench, jack, or whatever may be difficult.

I have my B&W in the rear position on my Ford puck system.

I use mine closer to the cab. No problems with my tailgate clearance.

The pin should be 1" in front of the rear axle. Weight the truck , hook up trailer, front axle weight should remain the same. 3" forward will probably load the front axel too much.

I would contact both Ford and B&W for their recommendation.
The information on my hitch was either over the axle CL or 1" forward.

I installed my RVK3600 hitch so that the king pin is 1 inch in front of the axle. I also have the puck mounted hitch.
Love the hitch. Zero issues connecting, disconnecting or towing. Best hitch I've ever had.
