Fairfax County Campground. Click here.
No matter where you land, you'll want to take the Metro system or the train system into the DC area for your site seeing.

I went to Cherry Hill and they have bus rides into town. There you can catch another bus to do tours of DC. I had a nice time when I went but my how things have changed. I wouldn't go back. As a matter of fact I would not go to most of the places we have visited.

Cherry Hill is nice. It’s in College Park they have the 86 bus that comes right to the campground and drops you at the College Park Metro station that can get you most anywhere in the DC area.
Another option would be the Dc North Koa which is in Odenton. It’s farther but they have a shuttle to DC but the setting is not in the city like cherry hill.
Beyond that depending on when you are going to DC you might be able to stay at the Greenbelt NPS it opens in July after a year of remodeling. It’s cheap but rustic. Depending on what type of drive you want to DC there are lots of other campgrounds around but those are the closest.

The KOA in Millersville is nice. Typical KOA. If you have military base access, Ft Meade has a really nice campground.

Riots in the streets. You cant even go inside the Capital anymore. I have been to a lot of big cities in our travels and I will not go back to many of them just because of the political climate .

We’ve never done this before. We’re newbies. The only places we’ve been to is Hondo, TX, Hobbs and Eagle Nest, NM

We stayed at Cherry Hill and thought it was a very nice park. Drove truck to metro station and took metro into DC.

CherryHill Park would be my choice which we did in 2010. Walk to the bus stop and leave the driving to someone else. I would return to any of the major cities again and not worry about the trouble makers. Would like to go back to Boston and see more of the Northeast part of the country. May fly and drive next time. Have been across the US through the South and across the North in 2010 and 2012. Great trips.

As a native of the DC area a couple of suggestions. Cherryhill is the most convenient. Don’t even think of driving into DC, take metro and I think they still offer an all day pass. Memorials and Smithsonian museums are free and doing just these can take several days ( lots of walking). Zoo is free and great for kids and adults. Again free but food and souvenirs are expensive. You can drive to some things not on DC like Air & Space museum at Fullas Airport or Gettysburg if you like history. Enjoy your time here.

DC Campground
Cherry Hill is very nice and has all the amenities but a little pricey. Little Bennett campground is a county campground and very nice and less expensive. One would still want to catch the metro and public transportation.

We stayed at the KOA in Millersville, then took the train into DC. This also allowed us to drive down to Annapolis.

Couple notes about DC area. At all cost, avoid I-95 during rush hours 6:30-9 am and 3:30-6:30 pm, it can be brutal.
Strongly recommend against grabbing a snack at the food trucks in DC. The museums are awesome so take your time going through them.
Spring is a terrific time to go; summers can be extremely hot and humid.
