New Ram auto suspension

When hooking up my truck has auto level, that's great!

what is the preferred method when unhooking your fifth wheel due to the truck auto leveling back to its normal height. When you take the weight of the fifth wheel off the truck it starts to lower again putting pressure on the fifth wheel hitch.

My question is do I just wait when I'm raising my fifth wheel off for the truck to adjust and adjust it so I can take the truck out from under it without stressing the hitch? Or do I disable the automatic leveling system in the truck?

Also when hooking up once the weight is on the truck the auto system raises the truck putting pressure on the rear hydraulics. Looking for ideas, thanks.

Or am I missing something on how to operate this suspension.

Hope. My question is clear. I think anyone who has a fifth wheel will know what I'm talking about. Thank you David

New 2022 big horn dually,

Hoping some of our MOC family who have Rams with factory air assist suspension can provide Pugtracker with some sage words of wisdom. Can't help as ours has the regular 14K suspension.....

Pugtracker, My 2020 Ram Laramie with Auto Level capability had a switch on the dash to set the height to lower approximately 2”. It was marked something like - ALT Level. If that does not work there is a “Tire Change” mode under settings. The ride on that truck was awesome but caused some side to side sway at times crossing overpasses that were uneven in height to the roadway as the computer was working to compensate from side to side but amplified the issue. And if going too fast it would drop the throttle down as the computer sensed “Trailer Sway”. Being 5th wheel rookie, that is when I found I was a bit over the pin weight. Yea, I listened to the RV Dealer when purchasing the trailer rather than educating myself of pin weights.

We have the auto leveling system on our Ram. Our Luxe trailer has Equalizer hydraulic system for the jacks but it works on the same principle as Level Up. I do not use the memory unhook at all but when unhooking I lift the front of the trailer a little bit to take the load off the truck. Then when the truck senses less of a load it will let air out and settle down. I try to take most of the load off the truck so it will not jump up to much when sliding the trailer off it. Hopefully someone has a better sequence of hooking up that will work for you.

Bingo that's what I'm.looking for the best way!
I will be trying several that I have learned so far hooking and unhooking in the next couple of months. I guess the fool proof way is put in tire change mode under settings. The other way I have not tried yet when unhooking is to hit the alt- level button I believe that this will work for unhooking but have not tried yet. When hooking up I'm really not sure which method will work, I have several options that I will try.
Thanks for your review
David

RAM Auto Level System

Your owners manual tells you the operations for this feature. To hook up and unhook up from a trailer you need to be in the Alt position as this turns off the auto level feature. If not, the truck will keep trying to level itself as you add or remove the weight of the trailer from the truck. You need to wait until you see the Alt level achieved on the dash as it can sometimes take a full minute to deflate the air bags without a load on the truck.

There are also a bunch of Mopar videos on YouTube you can watch.

I have a 2021 3500 duel with auto air. I don't do a thing. I drop the front legs, unlock the jaw and pull out. Never a issue.

I appreciate the feed back, I tried the alt level and it moved after I took the weight off. So, I tried the settings that turn it off for changing a tire, this works the best and it turns it back on when you go over 5 mph or I can do it. I understand the leveling but it seems to think like ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE 😂
THANKS

Ram 2500 and 3500 operate differently ... surprise surprise. The AUT Air level on the 2500, you could hit the "ALTERNATE HEIGHT" button empty and it would drop. The 3500 (2020) will not droop without a load ... not as good, IMHO I just raise the fifth wheen until it has picked up a good amount of weight and unhook.

We have a 2020 2500 with the Ram Air suspension and we were having a very difficult time unhooking our fifth wheel, 2021 H/C 331RL. The camper would "jump up" as I pulled out and the truck siderail would hit the bottom of the fifth wheel where the pin is located! Finally, someone on this forum suggested just lifting the camper a little to get the load off the hitch. Then wait a few minutes and the truck will settle down as it re-levels itself with the weight off. This has been the best method for us. We tried putting it in "Jack Mode" but we did not have consistent results with that. We do not use the "Alternate Height" button either.
We have had no problems hooking up.

Try raising the camper higher pulling out

When you put in jack mode, turn the truck off. It will not move.

Also to hook up when all jacks are down, we raise the rear jacks after the slides are in. And move the truck under the pin and lower. The truck goes to working leveling not putting any strain on rear hydraulics.
