Text, Talk, Ticket
That is the new law for Washington (the state). All of the electronic signs today were blinking "Text, Talk, Ticket." It's about time. Now I wonder how many other states will follow suit.

Being from Michigan, I know many states including MI are banning texting while driving. Is Washington (state) also banning talking on the phone? Does this include handheld as well as bluetooth or whatever device?

But we have so many loopholes to the law. While diving you can't talk on the phone unless you have a hands-free device, and you can't text on the phone...but you can dial a phone number, you can hold the phone in front of you and talk via the speaker but you can't hold the phone to your ear, you can call dial and talk to 911. As a firefighter with 30 years of service and seeing the end results of people distracted while talking on a cell phone I wish they had made it a simple - no talking on a cell phone while driving. But the cell phone industry lobbyist got involved. Please drive safe.

California has had this law now for a while, but you can always find someone not breaking it.

As a school bus driver for 7 years I have seen it all. I think talking on or texting or what ever on the cell phone should be jail time first offense. I can not tell you how many times folks ran stop signs, red lights and my " reds" because they were on a cell phone. It ranks right up there with drunk driving and me in a 26K plus bus.

Now if our law makers would come up with a law banning putting make up on while driving we might all be a little safer.

Jack, I agree with you! That first fine needs to more greatly increased!!!!
Yes and Doug, I see people in town all the time breaking it! Saw one lady on Highway 12 talking on phone driving out to Rio Vista on "blood alley"! Makes you want to be like Auburn and have volunteers to hand out tickets!!!

I want to make a sign to hold up that says "Hang Up and Drive" but I'm afraid it would be too distracting to someone who is already too distracted.

I have thought about the sign idea as well. However, it would be my luck to instigate some goofball into road rage!

Michael, just thought I would throw this out to you. I just recently retired from Jacksonville Sheriff's Office after 25 years as a patrolman. I once observed a young lady applying makeup while driving. She was all over the roadway and finally, slammed on brakes to prevent a rear end accident. After that I decided to stop her and issue a citation for Careless Driving. In the remarks section of the citation I wrote, "Also applying Makeup." The lady contested it in traffic court. When the judge read my remark about the makeup, while she was trying to tell her side of the incident. He told her she had nothing else to say, and found her guilty, plus Court Cost! You know I had to laugh under my breath....

We don't have a regular cell phone law in Idaho but we do have a law that covers inatentive driving and it could include texting, talking, dialing, appyling makeup etc. Now if some officer would just apply this law- - - - -.

In California they have also had to up the fine, but it sure seems like it's done no good. I can't understand how people find it so hard to use a hands-free device and make it legal, especially when they are the only ones in the vehicle. It might still distract you but it's not a ticket.
Just this past Saturday DW and I almost got sandwiched on BOTH sides within SECONDS of each other when drivers hopped the painted lines (and with bumps too) into our lane as we were driving on a wide blvd. I had to honk for a while to get them back into their lanes. And they continued to stare straight ahead like they didn't notice and both kept talking with their cellphones to their ears. I wanted to ram them off the road so BAD, unfortunately I was taught two wrongs don't make a right.

Well, today I think I have observed a down side to this, if there is such a thing as a down side. Now, all the cell phone talkers are pulling over to the side of the road to talk on the phone. This could cause other incidents. I wonder if there will be a law coming out that would require no stopping on main thoroughfares.

I had stopped my Bluebird Transit style school bus(26K plus) at a 4 way stop sign. I observed a car to my left approaching the stop sign and knew it would not stop. As the car went by there was a lady on a cell phone with two young kids in the back seat. I made the turn and pulled along side her at the next light. I told her she had nearly killed herself and her two kids by talking on the cell phone... She cursed me and gave me the finger and drove on. I have had them run my reds while on the phone.

Would you believe that Massachusetts politicians are actually debating a law to make texting while driving illegal? What is there to debate????

I hate that people are so stupid that a law like this is necessary.
Anyone with an IQ high enough to operate a cell phone should know better.
