TRUCK BED BOXES

Well, we just sold the camper shell in preparation for the new 3605RL we will be ordering. Now I don't have any place to store the tools, jumper cables, spare jack, etc. that I had in the shell. What type of bed box do you have that will not interfere with the 5th wheel when towing? I have a short bed Ford Super Duty and will be using a PullRite SuperGlide hitch. Thanks in advance for your inputs.
Jack

Hi Jack,
We use a low-top model, I have a Weatherguard, but many makers have them. Try a local auto parts store, truck outfitters, even Sears and Wal*mart. Good luck.

We have a low profile over the rail tool box and got it at Tractor Supply. For the short bed I would go with the in-bed chest type tool box, had one those in another Truck worked great. GBY....

We got ours at Lowes. It is bed rail height and does not interfere with the Superglide or the trailer. The aluminum finish still looks good even after 5 years. The cost 5 years ago was around 175 probably just over 200 now.

Got mine at AutoZone and it's flush with the bed rails. It won'd interfere with towing. I got the one with the tray in the top and it sure comes in handy for little things that would get lost in the bottom of a big tool box.

I have wheel well storage boxes for my tow straps, tools, bungees, etc. They are molded plastic and mount between the tailgate and wheel well. Keeps my stuff outa the cab and outa sight. No stuff rolling around, either. Lots of choices for you! Good luck.

We have a Weatherguard in bed with tray. Our son-in-law, who is a pool contractor, recommended the Weatherguard. He has had one for over 15 years and still looks great. A little more expensive than some but holds up. Ours is white like the truck.
Happy trails.........................

A lot depends on how much you want to spend. In our case, we bought from Highway Products in Oregon. Check www.highwayproducts.com
We got the 5th wheel box with a companion box (one in the front of the truck box and the companion box mounts near the tailgate.

They were pricey but I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for.

My Duramax is a wide bed and I bought a regular pickup box only it is for a narrow bed box--it fits down inside the box and does not hang over the side of the box-- it is a bit lower than the bed rails-

Thanks for all of your responses. I knew I could count on the forum for some good input. Sounds like a bed wide flush with the rails is the way to go with the short box. I will look for one with a top tray. I will you all know what I end up with. Thanks again.

Hey Glenn, Dave wants to get one for our truck. I guess we'll get a chance to see yours next Tues. so he can get a better idea about what to get. We are looking forward to the visit.

We just wanted a place to store stuff. We do have a cover and the box against the cab is covered most of the time, even when towing. We just got one of the less expensive heavy duty vinyl boxs at Wall mart. It does the job and did not cost a bunch.

We found a nice Huffy at Home Cheapo today for $248. It sits inside the bed instead of laying on the sides. We have nice bed rails that we don't want to lose. Looks good and the measurements show that it won't get in the way of the Monty.

There is so much storage in the new 09 units with the drop basement you no longer need anything in the truck , i put a bunch of shelves in it and pull outs and still way under wt so the wt police won't stop me for a bit of junk in the 5er ,,, sailer

Thanks again for all of your inputs and advice. I ended up at Lowe's and purchased a "Kobalt" made by Daws Mfg. It sits in the bed between the rails and has plenty enough storage for everything I was carrying around in the canopy.

I bought mine at Tractor Supply so long ago (bought it for a new 1999 F350) that I can't recall the brand. And I repainted it, so there's no logo to be found. Because my trucks have all been shortbeds I needed a box that would rise no higher than the bedrails. This one has served that purpose very well and is in its fourth truck. When I got the superglide they weren't sure the box would allow clearance for the rotation of the hitch head. After exhaustive measurements said it would work, they marked the truck bed, set the hitch in place, set the box in place, then tried it before drilling any holes. The handle clears by a bit more than an inch. And that's enough.

Sailer, I have to disagree with your statement that a box in the truck is no longer needed. Mebbeso for weekenders and vacationers but not for us fulltimers. Aint no way all that "stuff" in that box is going to fit in the Montana. No way, no how.
