Shore 30amp to 50 amp plug

Being the person I am I wanted to understand exactly how the physical connection is made in the shore power cable. I first took my fifty amp cable and used a test light to see which prongs on the plugs were which. On the round screw in plug I found that the two prongs (one which actually plug into a prong on the trailer and the outer eddge of the the connector) I labled them G2 for the outside edge, and g1 for the one that plugged into a prong. The remaining two prongs I labeled as B1 (for the one on the right with the lock piece on it and B2 for the one on the left. I then took the male plug and matched the prongs on it to the one going into the Montana. The round prong is G2 since it goes to g2 on the Montana, G1 is the straight blade straight down from the round prong. B1 is the blade to the left with the round prong being at the top and B2 is to the right. All that was fine I understand 110 goes from B1 to B1 and 110 goes from B2 to B2 when 50 amp is available. Then I want to check out 30amp, it has stumped me. The round prong goes to the G2 round prong on the 50 amp connector (looks like ground to me), the prong on the 30amp on the right side with the round prong down goes to the straight blade directly below the round prong on the fifty amp male plug (that confuses me) and then the blade on the left goes to both the B1 and B2 blades on the left and right side of the fifty amp plug. I am trying to figure out what I am missing here. Can anyone explain the wiring? Thanks Alan

The 50 amp service has two hot wires, a neutral, and a ground. Since the 30 amp service only has one hot wire, it jumpers the two hot blades together on the 50 amp end.
The straight blade below the round pin on the 50 amp is neutral. And it corresponds to one of the blades on the 30. That is what you are calling "30 amp on the right side".

Thanks so very much. I was making the mistake of thinking it was 220v 30amps. Thanks again. This site is so great.

If you read the open roads forum very much, you will often see someone post about plugging into what they thought was a 120v 30 amp outlet only to find out it was wired 220v and describing the damage done.
