Tire Montitors Loose

All,
I just balanced the tire pressure on RED. I found four out of the five sensors were finger tight at best and one loose enough to leak below alarm level. This is a remember to recheck tightness on the sensors about 50 to 100 miles down the road. This will prevent a loose sensor causing pressure loss. Just like lug nuts on rims.

Maybe just a bit of Loctite Green on the threads would help. They shouldn't vibrate loose but can be removed by hand.

The TST system comes with a wrench that slides over flats on the sensor and makes it very easy to tighten them. In fact, it's the only way to put them on or take them off which should aid as a theft deterrent.

I like the sensor locks on my Doran 360RV. They are a collar that slips onto the valve stem before you screw on the sensor. Once you screw on the sensor to the desired tightness, you slide the lock rings up into interlocking serrations of the sensor that mesh with the lock ring, then you tighten 3 set screws in the ring that clamp against the metal valve stem. I have tried to loosen one once set, and it did not budge. You would have to reef incredibly hard on one to unscrew it, let alone have it loosen up and fall off by itself. Maybe it could be an issue with rubber coated high pressure stems, but with the all metal ones it is pretty much a non-issue from my experience.

That said, being the AR kind of guy that I am (read: detail oriented), I do check them fairly often.

Don't want to be replacing $50 sensors, if I don't have to.

Thanks for the reminder, John!

We use teflon tape on the stems and they stay tight.

I have the locknuts on my Pressure Pro Sensors. They lock the sensors on so tight that you can't turn the sensors loose -- you must back off the locknuts first.

See Helen's post John. Teflon plumbers tape is the easiest, cheapest, and works. (So I have been told - and researched)

Len just installed our Pressure Pro system last night. I do feel a sense of relief having them on.

My Pressure Pro sensors have been towed about 15,000 miles in the past 2+ years and none have come loose. I do check them before we pull out and so far I can't remember any being loose. I know the sensor would let me know if the pressure was low due to a loose connection.
