Scratched the cap of our 2018 3120RL - need to repair

Hi everyone!

Getting straight to it... I had a minor jack-knife event with our RAM 2500 and 3120RL... rubbed/scraped the driver-side corner of the truck cab (1/4" x 1 1/4") - and scraped the corner of the cap (1" x 2"). I'm told the cap coating is gelcoat... appears to be a membrane of sorts... which when I collided with it sort of smeared / pushed / tore / wrinkled the coating. Of course we want it repaired... Any ideas? I've got the trailer in a Paul Evert RV (Keystone/Montana dealer in Mesa, AZ).

BUT... without any real working knowledge of this subject it's hard to tell good advice from bad... and we'd like to repair it only once.

I'm hearing that one repair-method would be to paint a portion of the cap and clear coat it... but that in the AZ sun - when the cap fades, the repaired area will fade differently than the untouched cap area (which makes all sense).

Isn't there a way to repair the 'membrane' (aka gelcoat, or whatever is really is) without paint? I've read of some marine fiberglass / gelcoat repair... is that what's needed? (Although... boats don't have this type of membrane... our boat's hull was more akin to the side of our Montana... not the cap covering material.

Help! I'm at a loss... and don't want to screw this up... again! Please advise...

My jack knife broke the rear truck window … $900 in smoke - good luck - i'd recommend you find a good fiberglass body shop - try to get a cash price - they matched a spot on the back of unit perfectly after I poked a hole it it.

Paul Evert has a good reputation here in AZ, I would tend to listen to them. You might take some pictures and talk to boat repair folks also.

Have yet to ding mine but is could happen next week.

My 3660 was damages by dealer in transit, front cap fiberglass damage. Repair was done by a Kenworth dealer at their bodyshop. Excellent work. Highway trucks are fiberglass, so they have lots of experience.

Not exactly on point, but you may want to consider a Pullrite hitch. Costly, but not only can you avoid high dollar repairs, you have peace of mind making corners and not having to worry.

Yes, it is fiberglass with a gelcoat final finish. Any boat repair shop should be able to repair it. Maybe RV shops or truck shops if they have a fiberglass guy; I lean towards boat shops because that is all they do; plenty of them in your area. Once it is repaired properly, you will never know it was damaged.

Little off the topic. We have some chips on the front cap and the dealership, here in Wichita Ks, gave us all the paint code and the place where to get the paint from.
