How to disassemble bearings for repacking...
I've repacked a lot of wheel bearings before but I keep looking at my wheels wondering how to disassemble. Is that a matter of taking off the wheel and pounding off the dust cover outward?
Any great vidoes? Advice?
Thanks... Gary

I didn't want to pound on the bearing for fear of damaging it so I pried the old seal out.

Well, you just remove like any other wheel and hub setup. Jack wheel off the ground, remove lug nuts and take wheel off. next take dust cap off the hub. I use a large channel locks. Next remove large nut on the end of the spindle. Once the nut is removed pull outward on hub to remove. After it's off remove rear grease seal. I use a long centering punch to remove. Then clean bearings with solvent and repack.

Does anyone know what size grease seal is used on a 2000 2855RL Montana? Is it exclusively available at dealers only or available at any auto parts store also?
Thanks... Gary

Any auto parts store should be able to match the seals for you.

If you know the # on your old seal you can use this reference chart.

Gary,
Go to the John Dsuban Spring Service Inc. web site. The seals that I ordered were the 10-36 Grease Seal for Dexter 12 X 2 hub, 2.250 ID X 3.376 OD. The Dexter part # is K71-305-00. I paid $16.21 for four seals.

Gary,
Earlier Dexter axles had a smaller grease seal diameter, I would make sure which you have before ordering.

Last question... From those of you who do it themselves... What's the preferred method of getting those wheels off the ground? I hear things like jack stands and then run your landing legs up after running them down to put the jack stands in but I'm a bit suspicious as to whether there'd be enough lift there. Tomorrow is the first dry day in forever so I'm hoping if nothing else I can get a big hydraulic jack under one of the axles to get this started. Anything I'm not understanding?
Thanks... Gary

I used a 12 ton bottle jack and did one wheel at a time.

All done... Used my big floor jack. One at a time. Brakes looked ok and didn't see a reason other then I didn't know what it looked like. Learned a bit about the trailer brakes. (I hope I got good info..) If it's a 12 inch brake it's at least 6000 lb axle and if it has black wires that makes it a 7000 lb axle assuming it takes 5 bolts to attach the brake.
It looks like you might as well just change the whole brake assembly if you ever do it.
Thanks for the help...
Gary
