50 AMP Power cord

I noticed that the yellow head of my power cord was showing some insulation that is under the black coating, like the coating had shrunk. So I opened up the plug and noticed the GREEN wire wasn't even connected to the plug.

So, I'm am going to reconnect them all, but my question is, this wire is stranded, will it hurt to TIN the wire with solder first?

It probably would be a good idea for you all to check your wires too....

I wouldn't tin the wires. If they are tight in the connector, they should be okay.

There may be a small advantage to not tinning the exposed wire as the copper strands compress when you tighten the connector POSSIBLY giving you more surface area contact. Would it HURT? I don't see how.
I believe I'll check my connections seeing how you had this issue. Thanks for the post!

Although you're dealing with the ground, which shouldn't be carrying any current, tinning the conductor will prevent it from making as good a contact as it should. The plug is designed to clamp stranded wire, and if tightened properly shouldn't loosen. Vibration isn't a problem, either, but poor technique is.

Tinning won't hurt them but I'm one who agrees with not tinning.

the only disadvantage is you will loose the flexability.where you sodier they will be rigid.

Be 100% SURE all those wires are very tight. I had the neutral come off and marry up with one of the 'power' lines...ended up with 180 volts on one line and 60 on the other. Fried some electrical stuff...the only good thing was that we were sitting inside when it happened, and got the power turned off in a hurry.

Thanks all, I put it back together without tinning the wires. Odd this was, the clamp for the ground was tight, just that the wire wasn't in the hole.

If I can still add Tom I have solder both ends at the plug and at the breaker box after 6 years, I see no harm. You would be able to really tighten those set screws on the soldered wire. If one is worried about the dissimilar metals there are coating you can add. IMO

I had mine come out about 8 months ago. I is another reason to have EMS, which will shutdown power to the Montana if you loose the natural. Since this happened while camping, and I didn't have a way to tin, I just stuck them back in. I would think tinning just 1/4 inch at the end. I think it will stay in better since the tined part will not flatten, so keeps it from sliding out again.
