Towing with an EV

I agree that the technology isn't there...yet. The car dealers aren't stocked with heavy duty, long range, quick charge TVs...yet. But I've learned to never say "never". Many people honestly didn't think that the automobile would replace the horse and buggy. In the past 100 years just think through the number of innovative technologies that rendered older technologies obsolete.

It's not there yet but much smarter minds than mine are working on it. EV's are likely here to stay and will continue to push technology to beyond where it is today. Who knows when it will be ready for "prime time"...but it will continue to improve.

I absolutely agree that at some point tech will replace gas and diesel. But I don't think it will happen in my lifetime and it wont be electric unless there are some major changes. Hydrogen technology among others have been suppressed for years. Hell there's tech out there that we may never hear of.

Do you remember when Cadillac build the last convertible. There would never be any more ever built and when there would never be any more mussel cars build. And what about large SUVs and huge vans. They were here to stay. I would be very careful about predicting what the future of transportation will be.

My uncle's company purchased a lot of vehicles from the local Chevy/Cadillac Dealer. One day in 1976, he received a call from the owner of the dealership asking if he was interested in purchasing the only Bicentennial Edition (one of 200 made, all of them white inside and out with blue and red trim) that was allocated to that Dealer.

My uncle purchased it for sticker price, drove it a few times, and parked it in his garage with less than 100 miles on the odometer. Sold it about 25 years later for a lot more than he paid.

There was s special dash plaque. As Lynwood said, " I would be very careful about predicting what the future of transportation will be."

I’m a baby boomer that has always been an early adopter of technology. Bought first gen Beta Max machine, built my own computer in late 70’s with a hard drive, purchased first plasma monitor, Cd, DVD, Blu ray etc, but was Not a fan of electric or hybrid cars given how ugly and lack of performance! That was until I drove a Tesla. Wow, what a difference from traditional gas, hybrid and other BEV’s. Our latest 2022 Tesla Model Y has mind blowing power and range (331 miles). While my diesel GMC 3500 duramax will Likely be my only option to tow my Montana this decade, I’m seeing quantum leaps in battery technology. I can’t ever imagine going back to internal combustion engine vehicle for our daily driver vehicle. I towed my side by side off road vehicle with the model Y (rated for 3500 lbs towing) to Moab, Utah and averaged 175 miles per charge. Tesla super chargers we’re conveniently located along our journey and only took 20 mins to charge ( enough time for a restroom break and burger). EV’s battery technology is getting better and better. While it may take 5 to 10 years to practically replace the range and power of diesel pickups, that day is coming and I openly embrace and look forward to it.

We live in an Area where Winters are Harsh. There is no way for us to do a EV.. Our hybrid is fine at 42mpg! Very Fearful of being stuck in a taffic jam or closed road due to snow and have to worry about a battery to stay warm.. Im looking for Hydrogen power.. Until then Ill enjoy my Firebird 400 , my Ram Diesel and the hybrid.. I have seen fires from these li ion batteries.. Very Scary.. NO THANKS...

It will take more than 5-10 years to get the grid up for everyone having an EV. Also, where does the power come from? Wind isn't reliable and sun only part of the day and not much of a part up north. Just foolish day dreaming in my opinion. There may be some sort of new break thru, but we don't know.

I did see some BYU prof got a small nuke reactor going that uses a salt solution or such that cant go off with no cooling, so that may be a possibility.

In the town next to my college an elderly woman drove one of these regularly in the early 1960's. Gotta say electrics have been around a long time. I still like my diesel p/u and the gas Escape.

Decent super duty size EV pickups are a long way out though the local bus company has mostly EV buses and they are big ones
