Pin Box's

I am about to buy a new air ryde type pin box. I know this has been beat to death in here but I have never heard much on the 5th airborne type pin box. For some reason I am stuck on this unit and have been for a long time. Anyone here tell me why I shouldnt be or should be?

Thanks
Dave

We have had the 5th Airborne for a few years now and have NEVER regretted getting it. Carol had surgery on her upper spine a few years ago and and the chucking tore her up. She noticed the great improvement on the way home from the installation.

It's no different if you had your heart set on the Mor-Ryde or any other air bag type of brand. It's known they do the trick and as long as you consider the new pin height you should be fine. As someone who does NOT have one, whatever brand one gets has everything good to say about theirs.

I hear about Mor-ryde in the MOC because they are often installed right out of the factory, but I have read many equally positive impressions of the Fifth Airborne. You can't go wrong.

I hope you report back how happy you are when you get it!

I have the TrailAir which works on the same principle as the 5th Airborne and I love it. I don't think one is better than the other and if I had it to do over again it would be the one with the best price. It will sure make a difference in your ride.

I installed a 5th Airborne on mine 2 years ago. Well worth the money spent.

What is the advantage to having one? I;m headed to Ak in June and having work done on the 5r wondering if it would be worth the cost?

Tom my experience has been that it softens the ride. The air bag and shock asorber which is part of the knuckle mechanism flexes as you are going down the road asorbing the shock of bridge expansion joints and bumps in the road. When I first got our 5vr on a trip to Florida from Indiana my back was killing me on arrival. I installed the TrailAir pin box and haven't complained since. What is interesting is while going down the road you can see the pin box mechanism working up and down but you do not feel that sudden shock in the back end of the truck.

I installed a 5th Airborne on our 2955RL and it passed the DW test. We found it smooths out the ride and I have just installed Airlift air bags which will level out the truck and improve the ride some more if that is possible.

I did not have a lot of chucking to begin with, only on certain concrete highways. But the new pin box virtually eliminated all chucking.
In addition, the air bag softens the shock from the truck to the pin box, and therefore the frame, going over rough pavement or bumps. I can sometimes see the 5er moving up and down independent of the truck.
Overall, just a better ride for the truck and the trailer.

Before I puchased ours I asked the dealer what benefit was. He said the main reason aside from getting a vastly improved ride was that it reduced stress on the coach. I remember seeing cracks under the B/R slide on some older rigs & the 5th A/B does away with that or so I was told. And the ride IS WAY mo better.

I have and love the 5th airborne, can bet riding on air to smooth out the ride, Trailer-air looks like it works the same, only 5th airborne hides the shook and air bag from the elements. and looks cleaner.
