Taking Pets to Canada

Contemplating camping in Canada (PEI and Niagara areas). Is is advisable to bring your dogs with you? Wondering about experiences of other dog owners whose pets have accompanied them. Assume that ownership papers and documentation of current vaccinations are required. Any additional advice appreciated. This question arises because it was our experience that animals brought into UK undergo a 6 month quarantine. Assume that Canada does not do this. Thanks!

Bowie: Bill and Pat, when we travel to the U.S. we take our vacination papers and our vet gives us a International certificate. Be sure the Lot #, Serial # of the vacine the date the shot was given, and the due date of the next vacination is included on the certificate. I can only assume that it would be the same requirements going into Canada as it is for us to go to the U.S. because we have been asked for the papers going both ways. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated! We'll check with the vet as well and be sure to get all the required docs as suggested. At least now we know a bit more about what we need.

We traveled with our lab, Peace, to Canada last June. You will need a certificate of health completed by you vet. We just told our vet that we would be traveling to Canada and he had to form. The certificate of health is for 30 days. We just kept Peace's paper with ours birth certificates and photo IDs. At one Customs stop they ask what kind of dog food Peace ate.

I have never heard of any kind of problems crossing providing you have proper registration and vacination documents. We have travelled to the the States on many occasions, U.S. customs looks over the papers closely but never have denied entry. At one point customs would look at the content of dog food pretty close but now those restrictions have been dropped.

The reason the UK has the 6 months quarantine is because they are an island and this requirement has stopped them from having rabies in the country. Diana

We travel with our dogs to Canada from the US on a regular basis from the areas you mention (upstate NY and Maine to the maritimes)and the only thing required are current vacination certificates for Rabies. Crossing umpteen times we have never even had anyone ask to look at those but traveling anywhere with your dog they should be with you. Customs agents usually stick their heads in the window and just flag us on..
