Newbie looking to purchase

Hi all,
We are considering purchasing our first RV to live in full time. We are currently looking at a 2006 keystone Montana 3790RD. It is a private owner. It is in excellent condition. Do you recommend having an inspection done first or can we just have the owner go through a mandatory list to see if things are in working order? Any pros and cons to this model that we should be looking for? Thank you so much and advance we’re going to see you in a few hours.

Many of the serious issues with an older RV can easily escape the untrained eye, therefore it is in your best interest to have it inspected by a qualified technician if you're new to RV's. Water leaks are the most expensive and difficult to repair. Refigerators are also very expensive. You want everything operating when you look at it. I bet that if you google it you can find a pre purchase inspection list to go by. I suggest looking at the unit yourself first, if you have not already done so, and then if you like it and the price have a professional inspect it. Good luck, I hope it's all what you're wishing for.

All good points. Definitely get a learned eye on it. Also, another consideration on an older rig is that many parks these days don't allow rigs older than 10yrs old.

Welcome aboard and congrats on jumping in to the process.

You will also need to be prepared with an adequate tow vehicle. Is the trailer a 2006 or 2016? The specs on a 2016 would likely put you in a 1 ton range for safe towing, perhaps a dually. Just a heads up.

We've been full timing for 9 years and in over 90,000 miles have never run across one of the 10 year parks. That said, I agree that you need someone who knows about these things before you buy an older one.

Hi all, Thank you for your recommendations and lists of what we should look for. I totally goofed and typed in 2006. It is actually a 2016. I appreciate all of your help. Also does anybody know of a good transport company to bring it back to Boulder city Nevada?

going 'used' is the way to start out. a couple of things: if tires are older than a couple of years; get new tires. but before you buy check everywhere for water leaks, roof, sides and etc.

other than that, go get them and enjoy the road.

There are a number of parks in the west with the 10 year rule. We frequently travel with a 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2008 year Montanas. All of them are in great shape. The purpose of the rule is to have a reason to deny a stay to some beat up POS.

Our companions always fill out the form (or answer the year question) that their rig is only 8 years old. This year they are all 2011. Next year the will be 2012. I doubt any park workers knows 5th wheels (or tow behinds) well enough to know the actual year with out looking hard. So far in 10 years, no one has even tried,

Just finished the self inspection. We didn’t see any tears in the roof. Just have a quick question on how the roof connects to the side walls. If someone could look at the picture attached and tell us if the “waffling” is normal wear and tear or if we may have an issue with the roof. We are going to check with a repair company in Prescott to see what they say as well. Thank you so much. So many questions when you are newbies. 😊

I find these "10 year" parks so amusing in California. They don't care if you use the street for a bathroom, but dang it! You can't camp in our park if your set up is 11 years old!

Sorry, I know OFF TOPIC.

I have only run in to one park that had the "ten year" rule. They will make an exception if you send pictures ahead of time showing the unit. We have a 2007 and they have never turned us down. Frankly, if the park will not be willing to look at picture of your unit and allow you in if it looks good then that park is too anal retentive for me.

Sorry for being also..
If someone has been driving all day and pulls into and RV park to sleep for the night but has a 10+ year old RV that is road worthy, safe and is in OK condition but is denied access because it is not up to the RV parks visual standards or because it's 10 years old and doesn't look nice, I am not a lawyer but I'm guessing in todays world unless the RV park can prove the camper is unsafe or a hazard to the park or people I'm thinking the RV park would lose in court.
Now imagine if that person or family was forced to continue driving to find another RV park and get's into an accident because of it...
If someone leaves a bar or private party drunk and gets into an accident the bar owner, home owner or person who had the party can be held responsible..

The "10 year rule" is not just a CA thing. OR, WA, AZ, NV, UT, ID, NM, and TX are states where we have been and found parks with this rule. It is their way to keep the POS RVs out.

We have a couple of RV parks nearby that need the 10 year rule or the "we reserve the right to turn folks away for any reason clause"

ScienceTeacher,
I am not sure you have the right year/model number. I have a brochure from 2006, as I had one. It does not list your model in it. Be careful of what you are getting.
