Reese 22k 5th wheel
I was given brand new in the box a Reese 22k 5th Wheel. I have a husky 16.5k now. Except for being a heavy weight is it worth changing out to the Reese or should I Ebay it? I have a 12000 lbs Montana.

Kinda depends on if you are happy with your current hitch and it meets all your requirements. Then it becomes a question of does the Reese offer a better benefit (increased load capacity, better features, better ride, etc.) or... does the Reese just look cooler than the Husky?
Do what makes you happy and safe. Ultimately, the decision is yours. I've never owned or used either brand, so I can't give you an informed opinion in that regard.

Sell it. You don't have enough truck or trailer to need a 22K hitch.

I have a Reese Elite 18k and am very happy with it. But that 22k is more hitch than you need. If you are happy with the Husky, I would just sell it.
Try putting it for sale on the MOC marketplace. May be someone with a larger Monte wanting a heftier hitch.

I have a Reese 20K head on mine. A few years back someone on the forum complained that their hitch didn't do it's job and attached pictures of the failed head. The real story was that they had been in a front end collision and the hitch had done the best it could and had protected them from the trailer coming right thru the cab. Since you can't predict the direction or amount of the force I error on the side of more protection is better. If it was me, I'd put the new hitch on and sell the old one.

I am with Dick on this one. I have Reese Elite 25K in my truck and my trailer only weights about 15K. I have always thought that more is better (within reason) when it comes to safety and security. Sure, it may be overkill, but I do believe it would hold up better if something bad was to happen. Maybe I learned that mindset after spending 26 years on submarines in the Navy. Pretty much everything on them is overkill and there are redundant systems for the redundant systems. -Glenn

Thank you guys so much for the info. I like what Glenn and Dick had to say. Hell I got the hitch for free and I found out the it will fit in my floor rails. So in the rain today it will get installed. I don't know a lot about hitches but Reese has been around for a while and I have never had a hitch problem when i have had reese installed. So I will open the boxes up and get busy today. Thanks again....

I'm late to this thread and sounds like you already made up your mind but I have had both a Reese and a Husky. Only changed because the truck with the Reese was stolen. I like the Husky far better. I did experience some of the sounds you did with the Husky. Found cleaning, tightening nuts, and lubing the hitch eliminated all those issues. Love the Husky and the slider is much easier then the Reese. Jim

My unit GWR is 16K max but net is 12k and as far as i know I could have used a 16k hitch. I found a nice Reece R20 that I installed. 20 % over necessary rating but I also think it is better to have some extra hitch capacity than to not have enough hitch capacity. Very little noise and no chucking. The hitch has a built in lube cover plate and some urathane (or something like that) pads in front and back where the head bolts on. Maybe they did this to to help eliminate noise and chucking. I hope you are happy with your new hitch.

I have the same hitch and was looking at the R16, but it was suggested here that I go a little over. Being new to 5th wheels, I figured 16k would be enough for a 15,500 camper. I'm happy that I went with the extra oomph. It is quiet and I've been happy with the performance. Of course, I don't have any experience to compare it to, but it does the job. I don't get any of the creaking or bucking that others have mentioned with some other hitches. And, if I remove it in 2 pieces, I can do it myself. I should mention that I also have the Mor/Ryde pinbox. I'm sure that helps.
