Height limit in Colorado
I just went thru the Denver area. My new Mountaineer with a 2nd A/C is around 13'6. I noticed that the height limit in Co. is 13' unless posted as 14 or something or other.
Any furthor info on this?

News to me. We full timed and traveled all over Colorado, home basing in fountain, just outside of Colorado Springs and never had a height issue with the rig. That sort of restriction would certainly impact commercial trucking. Side roads in any state can require caution.

Ditto. Been through state several times and currently workamping in the CO mountains. Never had a practical or law enforcement issue. Agreed it would wreak havoc with interstate trucking.
Better to concentrate on the hills and turns. Curious as to the source of the info?

You almost have to be a DOT enforcement officer to understand all these different requirements, or you can purchase a Rand McNally Motor Carriers' Road Atlas.
Colorado does have a statutory height requirement of 13'0" but that is only on non-designated highways. Their requirement on selected designated highways is actually 14'6". Generally speaking, designated highways are the ones approved for trucks, non-designated highways would include more county highways and interior city roadways. There are a couple of overpasses in Colorado that are under 14'6" on the interstates, but none on the interstates that are under 14'.

Good advise. We frequently use the truckers atlas to double check our Rand McNally GPS.

Thanks DQDick. I didn't know what all that 'designated' stuff meant. I did figure that something must be up since semi's are around 14.

The point might well be taken as.. KNOW THE HEIGHT OF YOUR RIG. There is a popular video on YouTube.. that I've also seen on TV where semi's and RV's go under a well known bridge (well known in that area) where drivers do not pay attention and the tops of the trucks/RV's are either sheered off or the rigs get stuck. More than just plain embarrassment. OUCH
Highways are well marked. I've seen some at 13'6". That leaves me cringing.

20th street overpass in downtown Denver is less than 13ft-there are warning signs out telling you to be in the center lanes.Only one I know of in Colorado.

Center lanes are over 13ft,that what the signs says.I use the center lane!

RichR brings up a good point that was demonstrated earlier this year here in Washington state when an over sized load was being transported down Interstate 5 from Canada. Another semi-truck passed an over sized load truck as they approached a bridge over the Skagit river forcing the over sized truck to remain in the outside "slow" lane and not to the center lane as was the over sized load truck drivers travel plan. Due to the bridge truss design being arched down at the side of the bridge the over size load truck hit the bridge trusses causing the bridge to collapse behind the over sized load truck.
