Too scared to keep 'em

After reading everything here and on other websites, I contacted goodyear about my Marathons. I told them (truthfully) that our Montana 3850FL was driven from our place of purchase in VA to Hilton Head Island and we did not exceed 60 mph but when my husband stopped for gas he touched all the tires, including the trucks and the Marathons were noticibly hot. I told them that we are traveling with a disabled son and having a blowout would be disastrous. They said that unless the tires actually failed there was nothing they could do.

At this point I do not feel at all comfortable driving any distance with them. I know someone mentioned trading out his original tires for G614s and getting a credit for the Marathons. Any advice on the best way to do this? These tires are still new with only the distance from Danville, VA to Hilton Head Island to Atlanta on them.

I worked a deal with the Local Goodyear Truck Tire dealer. Took the Marathons in and in a few weeks had a check for them when they sold them to a Farmer or someone with a lighter trailer.

I received $100.00 each for my Marathons on trade when I bought the G614's. The Goodyear dealer has lots of call for used trailer tires and was quite happy to have them since they were all inspected and were deemed to be in good shape. They had over 10,000 miles on them at that time.

I now have 5 - G614's and I watch them like a hawk as I did the Marathons.. The G614's can blow like any other tire and was recently reported here on the MOC as having happened to someone.

Talk to some Goodyear dealers and see if they will accept them on trade.

My experience was that the local dealer wanted nothing to do with the Marathons until I spoke with GY and they gave me a file number to reference when I went back to the dealer. They were interested after I got GY involved. However, it seems that GY isn't interested in your problem until it's too late. I did have a bubble in one tire and explained that to GY. I also brought up my concerns based on my reading on this and other forums. Maybe it depends on who you talk to there, I don't know. Maybe you can sell them on your own. They're decent tires for lightweight applications. I had a set on my Cougar TT (10,000 GVW) with no problems. I'd give GY customer service another try. Maybe a different agent will be more sympathetic to your concerns. One way or another, those tires should be replaced, IMO.

You could also sell the marathons on Craig's list. Farmers use them.

Well, I called our local Goodyear tire store and he said he couldn't even look them up unless I gave him a size. I thought they came in only one size, but he said he needed a height, width and rim size or he couldn't do a search. I did a quick google search and gave him numbers from what I thought was right, but I'm not so sure now because the guy said that he couldn't get them and they don't usually carry "E" rang tires anyway.

Can someone tell me what numbers I should have used for the height, width and rim for my 3850FL?

PS, I think I gave him: lt235-85r16

I believe the correct numbers would be: ST235/80R16E, been a while since I had Marathons.

What is the size of the replacement G614's for the Montana (3400RL)? Thanks. I'm really wanting to get these things off of my trailer, but have to find a Goodyear dealer in AK to work with me.

Are G614s ST235/80R16E or LT235/85R16G for my 3850FL? I'm so confused as to what size G614s I should order.

235/85R16G is the size of the G614's. They will fit your Montana. Be sure the stems can accommodate the higher (110) psi. Any Goodyear dealer can help you with this.

I got rid of my new marathons on a local classified ads web-site. Goodyear, both corporate and a local truck tire dealer offered me nothing at all on the new Marathons in trade for the New 614s. I paid a fair and competitive price for them. I sold the marathons for $400 for the set.

That's good to hear because I'm having the same problem getting Goodyear/local tire dealers to take them back. We're thinking of trying Craig's List.

the tires are no longer new, sorry. but the good news is that you can just try to get the best deal you can with a tire dealership. some people get great deals, others just bite the bullet and get rid of the marathons with nothing in trade.

as for traveling, make sure you have road service.

Just checked up here in Alaska and the cheapest I can get the G614's is $390 per, installed. That is going to hurt, especially since we are summer-users only up here Might have to look at some other options.
