TV Mudd flaps

There is a huge Toy Hauler 5er next to us and he has a really nice mudd flap assembly that goes in his trucks lower receiver hitch. It comes out and "T's" off where two extra large rubber mudd flaps hang down. He said he loves it because it keeps all the junk from coming up off the back tires of his TV and getting on the front of his 5er. Anyone out here have one of these? Do they interfere with sharps turns?

I think what you are talking about are called Rock Tamers and because they are hanging almost under the bumper they will not create any interference with the trailer

I bought a set of Pro Flaps mud flaps for my old Silverado. It was the hitch mounted style and liked them. However, I have since switched to a different style of mud flaps for the truck directly and they do a nice job without the need to carry around a 2nd set of flaps. I had no issues with sharp turns on the hitch mounted style.

That idea to build your own sounds good. Anybody have plans or pictures?

Rock solid guard works well. It is hitch mounted and keeps the junk of the front of the Montana. They are ugly but they work.

I have the Rock Tamers mud flaps and love them. They don't interfere with turns, reach to the ground to stop almost everything from the tires, and result in no more rock chips in the painted surfaces. AS Rich said, they are ugly but you really don't see them when the trailer is attached and they come off easily after unhooking.

I put the Rock Tamers on last January before heading South for the winter and besides not getting any mud on the Monte there is also not any rock chips showing. I had to trim about three inches off the bottom of the flaps so they don't drag on the ground when hooked up but they work great. So what do you want fashion when it comes to mud flaps or do you want practical use? Hey this ain't no beauty contest!

I have a suggestion for anyone that is thinking of putting them on their TV, have a separate tube welded onto the bottom of your receiver to attach mudflaps to so you can still hook up a trailer without taking flaps off!

IMO the rock tamers are a far better product than the Rock Solid guard or others. They are pricy but consider what the Montana cost and what a paint job our repair would cost. We had a set of rock solid guards laying around from our TT's and are now using them for the Montana. They do help but we are going to purchase the rock tamer system. It is a matter of cost vs Benefits. Amazon 225.00 shipping included.

K0LCB, when I was towing a car behind my little Ford Ranger pickup (years ago) I fashioned splash guards/rock guards by taking two pieces of angle iron clamping them to the underside of the rear bumper, marked for two holes and drilled through the angle iron and the bumper, bought a pair of rubber mud flaps the correct width and height, drilled holes through the angle iron at three points to match the holes in the mud flaps and mounted them with stainless hardware.

Rock tamer mud flap system delivered today. They are a bit pricy but after exploring all options it was the least expensive way to protect the front of the Big Sky paint.

I bought a set of Rock Tamers and love them. Yes, I do have to find a spot to store them when I'm not using them, but unless I am pulling the Monty, my small ones behind the tires do just fine. My only regret is that I didn't have them BEFORE coming up the ALCAN. Do damage, but lots of mud. But alas, no more.

Mud flaps like what are described in this topic are GREAT! I liked them too, until I saw the price. I bought inexpensive extra long mud flaps (dropped to 4 inches above the ground) that easily attached permanently to the rear fenders. If you don't mind spending the money, do expect a much higher cost for this style but make sure it's the more solid rubber type, not the baleen style. The baleen wears out and I can't tell you how many of these I've driven behind just flapping in the breeze not working at all and some of them I saw on the ALCAN!

Just a precaution, I understand these are removable for convenience, therefore might "walk away" when you aren't paying attention. You might need to add additional cost of securing them. This was another reason I went for the rear fender mud flaps as I needed the protection but had to keep the cost down.

The rock tamers attach to the ball hitch and they would have to take the entire hitch. The tamers are made of sturdy material .I have a set of the rock solid guard system that we used on our previous TT's but they just do not work on this truck. The flaps need to be 88 inches to cover the dullies and the rock solid guards were 68 inches wide. They are pricy but so is the price of new paint for the front of the Big Sky. I hope they work as chips on that paint job looks really bad.

The real advantage to the hitch mounted mud flaps (like Rock Tamers - which I love) v. mud flaps attached to the truck is the ability to set the hitch mounted ones very close to the ground when loaded. You can't do that with the vehicle mounted flaps (well you can but they won't last long if you do). Consequently there is a substantial area unprotected where rocks can go underneath the flaps and still hit the RV.

We are on the way home from a 2,000 mile trip (that's towing miles, we have driven over 5,000 miles.). That make it about 6,000 miles since I had the front re-painted and installed the Rock Tamers. Something went wrong somewhere on this trip as we now have a small rock chip near the bottom edge below the front compartment. One chip in 6,000 miles I can live with (and repair with touch-up paint).

The mud flaps are only attached when the Montana is. If somebody wants them, they will likely have to take the whole rig. Once stopped, the mud flaps come off and slide under the front of the RV. Not a big deal.

I just unpacked the rock tamer mud flap system and those are some serious mud flaps. They are solid heavy duty rubber not strips of vinyl like the rock solid system. Solid construction everything is heavy duty . Now if I can only put it together.

Helen took a look at the assembly instructions for the Rock tamer system and said it is no big deal. She will get on it as soon as it cools down a little.
