Serpentine belt chirping

I have had an ongoing problem with my belt chirping on my 2003 5.9 cummins dodge. Most recently the tensioner and belt were replaced and found out they did not use the heavy duty belt which was replaced with a heavy duty one. That was about a year ago and the chirping is back. Any suggestions as to what could be the cause?

Thx

The chirping may be a bearing on an idler. Hopefully if it is a bearing chirping, it is not a bearing on some other component besides an idler.

Send a message via Yahoo to NCFischers
There is a belt dressing that you can put on the belt to quiet it.

Belt dressing on serpentine belts is not a good remedy. Try to determine which side of the belt is chirping by spraying a silicone spray on first the backside then the grooved side of the belt. If the noise goes away when the smooth side is sprayed, you likely have glazed(shiny)idler pulley. Scuffing its surface with a scotchbrite pad usually will correct it for a time, or replace it. If it's the grooved side one or more pulleys may need replacing. My money is on a smooth idler pulley. Use a good quality belt too, cheap belts don't last long.

Belt is green which means it's heavy duty but only a few thousand miles on it. I will try the silicone spray. As mentioned, belt dressing is not for serpentine belts

We had a 2001 and a 2005 Dodge Cummins and they both chirped. Our Service Manager (who we TOTALLY trust) told us it was normal. Ours always did it and never had a problem.

You could take the belt off and check each pulley by spinning them. Check for rough action or looseness indicative of a bad bearing. A weak idler tension spring could also allow the belt to slip causing a squealing.

I had a supercharged Mustang that I could not keep a belt on for very long....I think that had something to do with a lead disorder in my foot though

New tensioner. Replaced when new belt was installed.

Mine chirps from time to time, usually on cool damp mornings or just after a rain. The chirping is in sync with each revolution of the belt and occurs when the seam of the belt passes over the idler and/or tension pulleys. I suspect it is the slick side of the belt slipping as it goes around one of those pulleys. Nothing to worry about and not a problem. The chirping goes away when the moisture evaporates and the slipping stops.
