I'm curious: Why the warning about the sewer flush

Why the warning about only using the sewer flush while the black tank valve is open? Is it so you don't forget about it until it overflows out the vent pipe on the roof? It's not like any pressure can build up with that roof vent up there. I wonder how often anyone attaches a city water fill hose to that flush inlet instead of their city fill by mistake. They're awfully close each other.

The overflow will come out of the comode not the vent pipe. Been there when If forgot it was still on. I do use it with a closed valve but always stay right next to it or use a timer.

Also, once it is full, there is the danger of bulging and cracking the black tank with water pressure from water that is coming in faster than it can leak out of the toilet or vent.

I wondered about that, but figured as there is a water-tight flush valve between the outside and the inside of the toilet, it would just keep filling right up and out of the roof vent if filled way beyond full.

Already had that bad thing happen won't do it again had the flush going and the Valve OPEN walked away for a few too talk to a buddy and saw water coming out of my underbelly ,a chunck of paper got stuck in the outlet valve and blocked it over flowed the toilet on the floor luckly I got it quick and shut the water off but still quite the mess, lesson learned do not flush till the tank till is empty and watch it till done

I also remember someone mentioning it coming out the roof vent and black water running down the sides of the trailer.

Have seen it done. Not something you want to experience. Clear water may be going in, but that's not what comes out

I may turn mine on but within several seconds I pull the black tank handle out and start the flow going. I just don't worry about putting tons of water back into the black tank after dumping as a means of cleaning it. I flush two different ways and figure all the gunk is at the bottom of the tank anyway.

I keep mine closed while I flush, but I also time mine closely. 2 min flush, then pull the handle.

Mine won't operate unless tank is open. No water will even go into the flush unless valve is open. Do some models have some kind of safety feature?

The only safety device I am aware of is the operator. You, as the operator, choose whether to run the flush system and the position of the valve (open or closed). And we know the operator can be undependable. Seriously, the stock flush system is totally independent of the gate valves. I personally run the flush system with the gate valve closed for 5-6 minutes. A normal campground only provides water at 5-6 gallons a minute. With a 45 gallon black tank, there is no chance of overfilling the tank. I do set a timer and a chair next to the flusher. I sit there so I don't get involved with something that will cause me to miss the timer. Also I listen to the sound of the flusher. If it should go under water, I pull the handle!

Ditto Carl, 4-5 minutes to let tank partially fill, then open valve and monitor discharge through clear elbow. Repeat until clear water flows.
