ok guys,
need some info, we are flying with my daughter to phoenix for her birthday (23) last time she can fly non rev with us at our level we are planning on going to the grand canyon 1 dy this trip is april 18th -21st. was wondering about any other areas to explore. thanks, monty is staying home not enough time to take this time

Well, IF you are thinking about Sedona, AZ. then you might want to include Jerome, AZ. It's less than 20 miles from Sedona and it's one of the neatest little towns I have ever seen. Jerome has a rich history in copper mining. Today the mines are gone (but the history is fascinating) and the town now survives on all the unique little shops that line the streets of the town. The town is built on the side of a mountain and each street is well above or below the next one. It's an amazing place and you can see most of it in about half a day (unless you really get into all the historical info centers).

We went to Sedona a few years back. A beautiful area. We also took a bus tour to the grand canyon and looked at the train that does tours also. I think they are out of Williams AZ. (crs!!) We missed the train,was full when we checked, if you want to go to the canyon by train,make your reservations early.

We did the canyon by train and then stayed overnight and came back on the train the next day. If you go and come back the same day you really don't have time to do much at the canyon.

We spent three season working at the North Rim, It has forest and less people to stand in lines. It is however 4 or more hrs around to the Utah side to get up there. Alt 89 then Hwy 67. I think its worth the time if you have it. Breath taking views.

X2 on Slufoot's post. We RVed at 1000trails in Cottonwood, AZ near Sedona and next to Jerome for a week. We spent a day in Jerome and spent a separate day in Sedona. Wished we had another day in Sedona. Of course a sidetrip to Grand Canyon which is quite the drive from the Phoenix area but closer from where we stayed. Then there's even a couple of wineries in those areas for tasting if you are in to that but I don't think you'll have time if you plan other places. At the campground there were roadrunners and warthogs. We heard there are snakes, too but we didn't see any.

Didn't have time to do that road from Jerome to Prescott, but it must be something since we saw lots of souvenir T-shirts with "I survived the road to Prescott" or words to that affect. A vehicle trip is possible but trailers are NOT recommended. I think it's called 89A. There's a pretty good museum in Jerome that explains its history of which I knew nothing before going there. Quite the gem if you like history of stuff.

Your timeframe will only allow quick visits to any of these places. But you'll definitely want to see much of the Grand Canyon (north on I-17, to I-40 west to Hwy 89 north to the GC rim). I'd suggest an early start getting to the South rim, then heading east at the stopoffs up to Desert View viewpoint time and daylight permitting. The Canyon gets real dark as the sun sets and then you can't see much. Then a second day to Jerome/Sedona.

The north rim is about 1000 feet higher in elevation than the south rim--so it does not usually open until late May--check the NPS website. Have fun. We took a helicopter flight across the lower Canyon and got the DVD to show what we saw and SAID! Great experience.

We recommend driving from Flag to Sedona on the Oak Creek Canyon road. Gorgeous drive down. Lots of stops and beautiful views.

You'll pass right by Montezuma's Castle at Camp Verde, Cliff Castle Casino exit. It's worth the stop and if you have the national park pass it's free.

Forgot to add....while traveling up I 17 you might want to stop in Black Canyon at the Rock Springs Cafe. They have a big RV parking area on the side and they are famous for all their different kinds of pies. It was an old stage stop and hasn't changed much.

We would like to tow from Grand Canyon to Sedona using Alt 89 from Fort Tuthill to Sedona but a little concerned about the switchbacks in the Oak Creek Canyon area of Alt 89. Any of you ever tow this section? I have been on Alt 89 from Prescott to Jerome and would NOT want to tow the switchback leading into Jerome AZ.

I've driven it but would never tow a fifth wheel on it. As I recall there is also a signpost about restricted towing on that stretch.

And do not try to go through Jerome in a downpour. You will go under the flash flooding coming off the hills as you traverse the downtown streets.

The restriction for trucks over 50' in length is for alt 89 is between 89 and Cottonwood and not between Flagstaff and Sedona. I have done that part of alt 89 before...not towing thank God...I sure wouldn't want to try it towing. But when I broke out my copy of the Mt. Directory West I find that the section between Flagstaff and Sedona is not recommended for "heavy trucks". So it looks like we will have to come down 17 and use 179 into Sedona.
