so, 11'8" means 11'8" !!!! It is kind of funny that so many people think that those signs are just a "suggestion"

We had a bridge in Pontiac that was even heavier duty than that one and had a height under 11 feet. The city had all kinds of warning devices, but someone would hit it every couple weeks. I worked across the street from it and often saw the results. One time a garbage truck hit it so hard, it shook the building we were in. It has since been demolished and replaced with a raised bridge, but for years it provided a source of income for the city who fined everyone who hit it.

Missoula, Montana also has a bridge like that. The DW was driving when we reached it. Fortunately, we could read and decided the warning signs were telling the truth. So, we detoured.

In Needles, CA, there is an underpass that is signed at 8 feet 6 inches. One day we say a large Class C heading for the underpass. He smoked the tires at the last minute stopping and turned into a nearby parking lot. But, it was close.

Nope, wasn't me--thank goodness. In my years driving the super semi, I seen many such like things happen. Our rig was 225 ft long and we could carry 987 thousand, and the rig itself weighed in at 205,000. With loads like that the suspension was always bouncing to some degree. One time in Detroit we came on a bridge that the survey said we could make, however the surveyor failed to mention, the far left lane was the one to be in. When ever we got close to anything like that the escorts always got out and watched. One rookie did not realize the bounce in the rig and kept saying go ahead, at intervals. When we got completely under the bridge, and couldn't get back out, we realized he had let us move when the bounce was in the down position, and now after stopping, we were actually pinned between the girders of the bridge. Needless to say, with 74 tires on 19 axles, it took us a while to reduce tire pressure enough to creep out. Another fun day at the office.

We had a rail under pass just like that one in the town in Pa. I lived in for many years. It too caught lots of trucks that people just didn't read all the signs and warnings. But I know first hand how that can happen cause out in the country there was a rail culvert that was only 10'. One day at work with my bucket truck I had a last minute job and was in a hurry to get there and was haulin butt. I was headed for the culvert and at the last minute my brain finally kicked in and I stood on the brakes to get stopped. It coulda been ugly lol lol....

Had one like that in downtown Wichita when I was with the Sheriff's dept. One day a truck hauling chickens hit it so hard the back doors broke open and out came the chickens. It was a poor neighborhood and most of the mess left in wagons and wheelbarrows before the city cops even got there.

The sad part about the bridge is, the city or county that has this problem should have fixed it years ago. There is no good reason they couldn't either. It's a simple fix without touching the bridge. all they have to do is angle out the road 4 feet deeper for the underpass. it seems the city and the railroad are waiting for a truck to do enugh damage so the insurance company will have to repair or replace the trusel.
