1998 F250 Light Duty
Awhile back I replied in a thread that Ford used to build a "heavy half" ton F150. The GVWR was higher than in the standard F150. I think GM did this, too, but am not sure which years. The primary difference between the standard F150 and the heavy half ton F150 was the suspension although there may have been additional differences. That's what gave it the higher GVWR. I know this because I specifically looked for the heavier GVWR when I bought our 1992 and 1995 F150s. The GVWR was on the door sticker. I also mentioned that in 1997 when the F150 got a body style different from the F250 and F350, the heavy half becamse the F250 Light Duty. The Light Duty F250 was discontinued a few years later. 2000, I think.
One of our esteemed members replied to my post, in not exactly polite terminology, that I was full of it and now I was saying my F150 was really an F250. I guess he doesn't understand that if I am unsure, I say so. If I know for fact, then I state as fact.
So, friend, guess what pulled in next to us tonight. Yep, a fifthwheel being towed by an F250 LD (light duty). I asked the neighbor if I could take a couple of pictures of his truck. It's dark but they didn't unhitch and did only minimal setup so may be out of here before I arise in the morning. The owner tells me this is a 1998.
You can clearly see in these pictures that this is the F150 body. And not quite so clear but still distinguishable you can see the F250 badging. The second picture is a closeup of the badging.

I had a 1995 heavy half ton Ford F150. It is heavier than a F150 regular.

More proof. They made a 250 and a 250 Super Duty in 1999. I actually was looking at an F350 from this year with the 7.3 diesel and noted the two 250's at that time.

The heavy half was a 3/4 ton truck with the 1/2 ton axels. Had one and it was a good truck, was un-aware of the 250LT badging. Bob

With the advent of the Tire and Loading Information sticker (tell us the cargo capacity), along with the GVWR sticker and easy access to the GCWR...names and numbers don't mean much any more.

The F250LD badging was only when Ford's F150 got it's own body style, starting with 1997 models. Prior to that, the heavy half tons had the F150 badging. The only way to tell it was a heavy half on those earlier models was to look at the GVWR on the door sticker.
Prior to those models, when the F150 first came about, the F100 continued. The F150 at that time was known as the heavy half ton. I'm not sure the sequence of events when the F100 went away and the F150 badging was used for both the 1/2 ton and the heavy half.

Wonder what they will call the new GM1500 (2010) with the 4.5 diesel? Also why is the GM4500 and GM5500 call Medium Duty? I would have thought medium fell between light and heavy but then I am not in marketing. I suppose they mean the 2500 and 3500 are actually LTHD's. Dodge seems to call only the 4500 and 5500 HD and at Ford everything is "Super" except the 150 but they also are planning a diesel for the 150 so watch for a new designation like "Enhanced Duty". Hope I never have them following me towing a 14,000# 5'ver.

Our Dodge 3500 says "3500 Heavy Duty" right on the fender badges.
Roger, in the Ford line, there is an F150 SuperCrew. And what GM calls an 'extended cab,' Ford calls a 'supercab.' But, haveing driven Fords for many years and towed many miles with them, I understand why they're labeled "super."
