Hi! I'm Mary from Montana. John & I just bought a new 2005 3500RL to tow behind our new F350 diesel. We traded in our Airstream MH. Now we have to figure out how to drive this new rig! Any suggestions, helpful hints, etc.? Neither of us has towed anything like this before. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum, mjflora! The info you need will be along shortly. I myself am going to have to learn how to tow a fifth wheel when we get our here shortly. This is definitely the place to get info from.

Welcome to MOC. They are really easy to pull but it might help if you can get to a large parking lot (wal-mart-high school-etc) and practice turning and backing till you get a feel for how it behaves behind your tv. You have come to the right place for info.

Two things that are important to remember the 5th wheel turns inside of your truck and look out for any thing hanging low, bridges, branches, wire, etc. Other than that enjoy that new Montana. Roman

Just remember, those RV wheels track WAY inside in the direction of the turn. Get used to going past your normal turn point and making a sharper turn than you are used to. Practice in a big open area and get a good look how far those wheels track inside of the turn. Just takes some getting used to. Also, acceleration is much less than you are used to due to the heaver weight of the bigger rig...give yourself plenty of room to merge onto the highway.

Welcome to the MOC. You are going to love all the extra room you have in your Montana. We too went from a MH to the 5er. Tom does the towing but says it is a good idea to do some practicing as others have suggested. In a very short time you will be going down the highway and won't even feel that Montana behind you. Keep us posted on your adventures!

Welcome to the MOC. Practice makes perfect. Be carefull and always look up. Your almost 13 feet high. When practicing your backing, use the 5er wheels to aim where you want the rig to go. Do not use the back of the camper to aim at a spot or you will over cut the turn.

Welcome Mary. Read, read and read and then ask, ask and ask. You'll find a lot of answers here. Some you will learn by doing. Don't be afraid to ask questions of your neighbors when you get to a campground. That is how we learned our first time out how to hook up the sewer hose. That was 15 years and 3 5ers ago.
