Garin1,
I think if you search through some of the past topics you will find a great deal of information and opinions that will apply to the topic of which oil. I just had this talk with my mechanic at the dealership today and I am choosing to stick with the standard oil vs. the synthetic. If you also do a search on mileage intervals between oil changes I think you will get a great deal of information to go along with it. I change my oil every 3,000 miles and my mechanic today tried talking me into every 5,000 miles as the oils that are on the market today are much better than the past. I feel more comfortable with the 3k changes, I figure what I spend ($50) on an oil change is more than paid itself back in the additional fuel mileage (mpg) the diesel provides me vs. a gas motor. As far as filters go, I use the factory filters GM provides for the Duramax. This is what works for me. I know you are going to get other opinions, just go with what feels best for you and your new truck.

Check with your dealer. Mine had lifetime oil changes for $550.00. I figure that after about 36,000 miles the oil changes will be free.

According to the Ford owners manual there is no special break-in oil requirement. I always did an oil change on my gas engines at 3000 miles. My son-in-law owns a diesel (truck and equipment) repairs business and put my diesel truck on a 5,000 miles interval between changes. If you want to change more often go for it.....the cleaner the oil the better! Don't forget the transmission as that gets a hard workout when towing. I change trans fluid every 15,000 and the trans filter every 30,000. I had close to 100,000 om my previous 01 Ford and never had a problem.

I change my oil and filter every 5k to 6k miles. Change transmission fluid and filter once a year. Good luck, everyone has their own thoughts on maintenance schedules.

Garin1, this is an excellent site for you. Among other things it lists Ford approved oils and filters.

http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/home.html

Rotella T is my choice of oil. The ONLY approved oil filter is the Motorcraft filter. You can pay Ford $38 for that filter. Many Walmarts now carry it for half that price. I get mine at Walmart. Originally the only oil approved was Motorcraft but as they tested others they now list a number of oils that are acceptable for their warranty. But not yet on the oil filters.

That dieselmann site also lists all the tech bulletins and any recalls.

I change oil at 5,000 miles. I did it the same on my 2003 F350 6.0L and this 2005 F250 6.0L. In both cases the truck has NEVER used any oil. It has never been below the full mark even at the 5,000 mile point. Between those two trucks we have put on 98,000 miles with about 40,000 towing a 14k+ lb Montana.

I put 4700 miles on my 06-6.0 before the first oil change. It was done by the dealer who sold me the truck and it was free. From now on it will be me paying for them. Rotella T 15w30 is my choice of oil. I can buy the Motorcraft oil filter at most Wal-Mart for 19.00 to 21.00. You may want to look at this web page also. http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php
