Who will be First

Now that a vaccination is close at hand who will take it?
I’m a science guy. If science and the drug companies tell my it’s safe and effective I’d be first in line. I look back at other vaccines and see what they have done for humanity and marvel at what had been accomplished.

DW and I are ready as soon as it is available. We will need to wait to see how Washington DC prioritizes just who gets what place in line. My unscientific hope is to get the vaccine in March/April. We are grateful to those that cut the red tape to get this vaccine out to the public in record time.

I'm torn. I rarely take anything and rarely catch anything. There's no substitute for a robust immune system which is made stronger by not trying to protect it from stuff. I've never had a flu shot.

That said, I don't really want to test my robust immune system against Covid. No way of knowing, really, even though the recovery rates are increasing along with the infected rates.

So...I'm torn.

As someone with a compromised immune system due to a 7 year battle with Cancer, I wish everyone got vaccinations. If not to protect themselves, but to protect others.

In my younger and dumber years I never took flu shots. But as I have aged and seen what flu can do to older individuals I have started getting the flu shot every year. And the same with aging and pneumonia. I have taken the medical advice and got the pneumonia shots. Why take the chance. None of them hurt you and may well save you some misery, or worse.
And when the trials have proven the covid vaccine to be safe and effective I will take it also. Too many cases of one person getting it and spreading it to family and friends.

We may not be first in line but for sure wont be last. We both get yearly flu shots. I have had shingles (weeks of pain) so we have had that one along with the pneumonia shots. None hurt, none cost a penny and except feeling logy a couple days, no after effects' A 98% survival rate just isn't good enough for us. We do plan on waiting for a short while and why we wont be in the first group in line tho not the last.

I do the flu shot and shingles shots. For the covid vac, I want to see what the side effects are and am concerned about what short cuts were allowed

I'm not an anti-vaxxer, but I think I'll wait a while a while before taking it. I'll keep limiting my exposure and will wear a mask if I need to go to the store.

I don't know. I've never had a flu shot. My wife got one years ago and was sick for 2 weeks so she says she's not getting one.

Something to consider before taking a cavalier attitude about COVID.

246,000 covid related deaths and counting in just 8 months is not “just like the flu” that might lead to 40,000 deaths in a full year. Make wise decisions, for family and friends if not for yourself.

That's way short of the original projected mortality rate of 3%-5% with projected 70% of the population infected. We obviously saved millions of lives with our lackadaisical mask wearing and distancing.

Given that 83% of the deaths come from those 55+, it's not a serious concern for the youth of the country. Especially, since their social security is being threatened. Maybe their decisions aren't so "unwise". Wouldn't you think?

I don’t pay much attention to the numbers on the news. I know this is serious and DW and I are taking it serious. We do not want to catch this thing. As stated earlier in this thread - we will get the vaccine as soon as it is available. We have been doing flu and pneumonia and shingles etc. I don’t want to catch that stuff either. I suspect we will be wearing masks for a while even after the vaccine comes out. Ok...whatever...it’s no big deal for me. I just do not want to catch this.

As to the numbers and statistics...my 92 yr old mother died Aug 11. After being locked up for her own safety in the assisted living home, my sister could not come take her out on the routine week of Sonic, bridge with friends, Mexican food at Francisco’s, etc etc. For some reason - she quit eating on July 11. Maybe a medication got off. She could not keep anything down, even water. Everybody did everything that should have been done. My sisters and I think she just gave up, did not want to go on like this locked away from loved ones, and she wanted to be with Dad, her sister, etc etc. She did not have COVID - but she was most certainly a casualty of this situation. I agree that the nursing homes needed to be closed off to protect seniors but the loneliness is a killer. Where do they track that statistic?
