Lug Nut Socket Size?
We will take delivery of our new Montana 2955RL in approximately two weeks. We are not new to fifth wheels as we just sold a 1998 Cardinal. Hope the Montana is as good as you all have stated. I have learned several things from MOC but would like to know the lug nut socket size. I will be taking my torque wrench but my tool kit only goes to 3/4 inch. Don't know if I need to buy a larger socket.

Hi Bruce,
First of all, welcome to the MOC,You bought a great unit, I'm sure you will enjoy your new 2955RL.
If you have been reading this forum for a while I am sure you realize that Montana's are not with out their
problems, Most are small, and they seem to look after the majority of the rest. we bought our 2980Rl last Nov and have used it half a dozen times all ready. really enjoyed it.
Our Lug nuts take a 3/4" deep socket.
Take care
J & D

I just bought a 7/8 inch socket -- it fit my lug nuts on a 2006 3475RL. I don't know the depth--but the socket was about 3 inches long. Check at a auto parts store for the correct 7/8 inch socket depth.

Thanks for the info. I'll think I have a deep well 7/8 inch socket. We are sure looking forward to traveling with the new Montana. I retired in March and we are pretty much foot loose and free to go when we want. Don't think we are ready for full timing but may spend some time in Fla. or Tx. during the winter. Thanks again.

Bruce, We purchased a 3400RL in September/05 and love it. Dealer was great to repair few things wrong. We would purchase another. We are full timers now again for almost 2 years and love it. We do 3 months in Texas and then over to Florida for 2 months and then putsy on home to Ontario. We love to fish so rving is a great pastime, never a dull moment with everyone you meet so unique in each situation. have fun and perhaps will meet you on the trails this winter.

Bruce Lenhardt, I suppose from this thread that you are already aware of the need to re-torque all the lug nuts often during the first miles of travel. I think they recommend every 50 miles for the first couple of hundred, so you may even want to take that torque wrench with you to pick her up (if that's not what you already meant when you staed "I will be taking my torque wrench . . ."). Evidently the paint on the wheels where the lug nuts seat causes them to loosen up. This may not be an issue with aluminum wheels unless they are painted also.

Ditto what VanMan said but add to retorque EVERY time the lug nuts are loosened or removed for any reason. Unlike car rims, the lugnuts on the trailer rims do require retorquing. When I am retorquing ours I do it whenever we stop (usually 50 to 150 miles) and continue to do it until they no longer tighten when I take the torque wrench to them. Ours has the black nut covers so I leave those off until done, as a reminder.

7/8 is correct for our 05 3670, but our 02 was 3/4. If you are going to buy a socket, get a deep six point (hexagon) one, they are less likely to damage the nut's finish than a 12 point one.

Torque check should be a dealer prep item, but almost certainly isn't. I'd be willing to bet a large amount of change that torques weren't checked during or after the delivery tow from Goshen, and the Keystone Owner's Manual is pretty specific about the first 50 miles and again after that. Doesn't say "after you buy it."
Might have the dealer do it, but I'd rather do it myself...at least I know it was done, and, hopefully, correctly.

I thought I was going to be the only odd ball out there. My lugnut size is also 13/16th. I also have to say that I was surprised by how loose the lugnuts were after sitting on the same site for six months. There were a couple that I actually took three turns before they tightened up to 120lbs.

Our lug nut size is also 13/16. Just had new rims and tires installed at the Montana Service Centre and they really emphasized that the wheel nuts should be torqued every 50 miles for the first 200 miles and every trip thereafter!

VanMan, I have aluminum wheels (not painted) and of course so far everytime it has been moved the lug nuts needed torqued. I guess after awhile it won't be so bad. I had them torqued while I was waiting to pick my unit up (and I watched) and I drove it home and the many of the lug nuts had already became loose. So, it appears that maybe after you get many miles on the unit, the torquing will be reduced, but I will always check just like I did with my old unit. Allison
